Spicing Cumberland up a little bit.

For real, kudos on the completed "Evolve" Condos/Apartment complex building. That, the Hilton hotel, and the University Commons area with the Publix/Walmart/Shopping actually look classy and non-eye bleedish. Proud to see the campus/strip area inch forward into the 21st century.

Here's some pictures for any of the guys living away from Knoxville and haven't had a chance to see them yet.

Design Rendering of condos:

Condos right before completion (Obviously looks different now that the building has tenants and is functional)

Design rendering of University Commons (Publix, Walmart, Tanning, Vol Shop, etc.)

Buildings right after completion

Also, here's some upcoming projects planned for the area with pictures.

What: 5 story - Childrens Hospital Expansion -- For children with systic fibrosis and other chronic illnesses and the Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)
Where: Corner of White and 21st

Design renderings

What: 6-7 Story Condos
Where: 17th St./White Ave. Block

Found this from WBIR:

quote:

"Their focus is really looking at more professionals," said Cumberland Avenue project manager Anne Wallace. "Folks who might be working at the hospital or at the university, appealing to professors and graduate students. So really looking at a different, year-round market."

There are few details on the overall plans right now, but according to the artist renderings, it could be as many as seven stories, taking up half a block.

"Built in, year round residents would really help to improve the business district, help to improve the look and feel of the area, help to improve safety components and sort of make it a more interesting urban environment," Wallace added.

This proposal would make it four major projects, outside the streetscape plans, to hit the Strip:

If anybody else is into this type of thing and wants to add anything to this, feel free. The more the merrier

Do you know if Dewhirst is the one who developed this? It's funny, I live between Old North and 4th and Gill and never head to the strip, but It's about time someone invested in it, there is a killing to be made there.

The university commons area is nice though. Downtown/campus and the surrounding neighborhoods are slowly but surely being improved.

They've added some new apartments on the backside of the Fort as well, looked really nice.

Really looking forward to the planned changes to the strip. It's much needed, just hope they don't kill Krystal ha

LINK

Here's a link to the construction plans for the strip. Kind of hard to look at it all but you might find it interesting.

I believe so, but I'm not 100%.

No doubt man. It's been refreshing to see all the new projects and renovations all over downtown. Once they get the river front property developed across the bridge, that's going to set it off.

Random info: As of the 2013 census Knox County was just shy of a 450k population. As of 2015 we're expected to pass that number. Blount county closing in on 125k and Sevier county about to hit 100k.

Are you talking about the new complex with the orange paint you can see from the interstate? Kind of tucked away in the corner?

If so, that looks really good too. I noticed them coming from Alcoa Hwy merging onto I-40.

I saw the planned upcoming changes to actual Cumberland itself. They look great, hopefully it doesn't take 10 years to finish. They better not touch Krystals.. So many memories in that place that no one will ever remember.

Anyone know if they plan on rerouting the power/telephone lines and run them under the street like they do out west? The power cables from the 70s have always bugged the shite out of me and clutter up Cumberland.. JMO

Yeah, they're hard to miss with the colors. Unfortunately they're right beside that rail yard which sucks.
