Don't get sucked in to believing that again

I need to see 8-4 at minimum in 2017

Ugh, see I find this an asinine expectation. Imagine going back to the day we hired him in December 2012 and someone warned you that going into year 5 of this coach 8-4 would be the bar. Tennessee is a 10+ win a year football program a if treated like such. My fear is this man rides out another decade of 8-4's and continues to sell it like it's special and parade worthy because the bar lowered.

That is the minimum expectation. I thought we would make a run to Atlanta last year prior to the injuries and take a slight step back in 2017 due to what we lost in the draft. 8-4 would buy him one more year for me and then it's Atlanta or bust in 2018. Not a decade of 8-4s like you mentioned. 9-3+ gets him an extension and 7-5 you have to look at letting him go. He has turned around one of the biggest disasters in college football after what felt like a decade of 5-7's and sub par recruiting classes. He has earned another year short of a 7-5 or worse 2017 for me.

This is my line of thinking as well.

I guess I'm just less patient and think this year should be an Atlanta or bust mentality. Lord knows for once Butch owes us a year where we out perform our expectations.

I think we get 9 wins this season, but I agree we need to be legitimately competitive annually. I'm not quite on the fire Butch train as I think he could turn the corner and I quite frankly don't have faith in UT hiring a more competent replacement.

I have finally found the words to explain my position

It depends on who we win and lose to, really.

If Butch goes 7-5 but beats Florida and Bama, what do you say then?

7-5 is still 7-5. If you beat Bammer and UF, being 7-5 would suggest you can't motivate the team consistently.

It would probably save his job but I wouldn't agree with it

Just FYI, if Tennessee goes 7-5 they aren't going to beat Alabama. We only lose to teams that are ranked at the time and finish ranked.

So, if Tennessee beats Alabama, it means they are going to go 10-2 or 9-3. And at that point Butch is all up da hill for years to come.

Agreed.

If we go 7-5 Butch will get ran out of town. 8-4 will pacify for one more year.
