I think they have done a good job so far. The defense looked so much better last year than it did during the preceding few years, which isn't saying all that much, but still.

I've not seen anything from Jancek thus far that makes me question the defense or the calls. Anytime we've given up 30 plus points, it's typically been when the offense has done absolutely nothing and a pick 6 was involved.

32 vs UGA - gave up a fumble in the end zone for a TD
42 vs. USC - this was just a weird game. D was off balance but Spurrier was going for it and being pretty unconventional all game long
34 vs. OU - pick 6
34 vs. Ole Miss - I think Ole Miss got the ball at the 50 yard line each drive. Also, Ole Miss sort of poured it on with 2 TDs at the end when the backups were in and D quit caring.

The D finished #36 in the country and that was with an entirely new DL. They should improve this year and must get better in the red zone. I think they will finally have the talent and experience to dictate more on Defense. Stripling is a really good DL coach.

Also, wasn't the problem at UGA the whole co-coordinator deal?

Martinez was terrible as a coordinator for us. He's an ok db coach but you'll find that he will play players with seniority over skill. Jancek didn't really stand out one way or another for us. I just know that those are only two of three coaches that Richt had fired. That's not a good thing

Last year's defense was nothing short of amazing. Their performance was a lot closer to miraculous than people realize but no one sees it that way because they performed well from the get go and the woes of our rebuilt oline took the spotlight. But that defense had this to deal with: an entirely new defensive line, only a handful of DTs (we had to have DE Jordan Williams gain weight over the summer to become a DT for us), a true freshman starting at DE, hardly what you could call a rotation at DT and true freshmen all over the field seeing significant playing time.

In a lot of ways that defense was put together on a wing and a prayer. It just happened to work. So I've got nothing but love for our defensive coaches right now. I've seen our DBs grow and improve every year and our defensive calls have been solid and occasionally they've been downright inspired. Recruiting is above and beyond and although we've had to rely on freshmen a lot those freshmen have been better prepared than I expected.

And with tons of freshmen seeing PT and rebuilding both OL and DL we were one of the least penalized teams in CFB (that's damn good discipline and coaching). I don't know what happened with Martinez and Jancek at UGA but they've performed well above expectations at UT. Maybe they've simply grown and gotten more experience or maybe it was a matter of coaching chemistry, circumstances, or timing. Whatever the case may be I'm happy we have them.

I know what went wrong with Willie. It does seem as though he's out grown it.

Did you mean to say you don't know what went wrong? Cause if you do know I'd love to hear it

Couple of things with Willie. First, he always played seniority over ability and that but us in the arse a few times and kids quit on him because of it. His biggest issue was when he took over for Van Gorder he tried to be Van Gorder instead of his own personality. He couldn't get the kids to buy into him. He tried to be the fireball personality that VG was instead of his easy going personality he had as a position coach.

I would imagine he has learned to play the best out there and since he's not the dc he won't have to be the ball buster.

Edit: sorry it's not more juicy
