This should be an extremely good defense this year. Last year, we finished #36 in the country. A guy like Corey Vereen is a Jr and will be a backup DE. He gives his all on every play.
DE - Derek Barnett
DE - Curt Maggitt
Backups - Cory Vereen, Kyle Phillips, Darrel Taylor, Andrew Butcher
DT - Owen Williams
DT - Danny Obrien
Backups - Kahlil McKenzie (for now), Shy Tuttle, and Kendall Vickers
Keep in mind Stripling got last year's DL with zero returning starters up to speed.
LBs - Jalen Reeves Maybin, Dillon Bates, Darrin Kirkland, Jr,
Backups or starters - Kenny Bynum, Cortez McDowel-he is on the JRM plan
Backups - Elliot Berry, Gavin Bryant, Quarte Sapp, Austin Smith
We have bodies here but not a ton of experience
CB - Cam Sutton
CB - Justin Martin or Mosely
SS - Ladarell McNeil
FS - Brian Randolph
Backups or starters - Todd Kelly, Evan Berry, Rashaun Gaulden and then Malik Foreman and Devaun Swofford. All of these guys played alot last year.
This is going to be the most talented defense we've had on paper since 2005.

Are you sure you posted this on the right board?
I think this defense will be very stout this year. I'm only worried about DT being a little thin and LB inexperience although I think the talent is there in both positions. I really think K McKenzie has a huge impact early and often.

MLB is the weak point. Everywhere else seems in good shape to me

I figured I'd give the secr a break.

LaTroy Lewis, Chris Weatherd, and Dimarya Mixon should all make an impact as well.
Pretty exciting looking at the talent on this D. MLB will be the question mark but there is some real potential there with Bates and Kirkland.

God. I forgot all about those three. WOW.

FL98 insider posted his projected depth chart for fall practice and the defense looks filthy. He also said he expects Kahlil to start at DT against Bowling Green even though he's #2 right now.

Either way KMac is going to play alot. I think he will be better than kcdemiche and have a Barnett type impact.

Crazy thing about depth huh? Haha. All three guys will be contributors though.
Weatherd was a beast every time he was in the game last year. Always pressured the QB.

Has anyone heard if TKjr has a chance to supplant McNeil or has McNeil finally turned the corner? I had high hopes for him when he came here.

I am right there with you, although you forgot Chris Weatherd in the DE/LB slot. As well as Saulsberry at DT if he's healthy

I hope so. I thought TK looked great towards the end of last year when he started getting significant PT. McNeil is good at coming up and helping in the run game but imo he's a major liability in coverage. I think teams will make a real effort to pick on McNeil through the air this year with Coleman gone.

As they should. dude can lay a lick but his coverage sometimes sucks and his angles are absolutely awful at times. TKjr will be a star, might as well get it started early.

Pass Rush may be the best in the country. DL and DB positions are starting to look incredible. LB, outside of JRM, is a bit of a question mark, but I have confidence that group will be above average.
Opposing offenses will just have to pick their poison.

Chris Weatherd
Weatherd is our best pass rusher - period. He's been working in the LB/DE hybrid role Maggitt performs and depending on how much he picks up he will see a ton of snaps, imo. Imagine rotating Maggitt and Weathered just to keep them fresh. Maggitt is better all the way around but not as a pass rusher. We could see something like 50-50 on passing downs or even 60-40. OH. MY. GAWD.
Lewis is a solid backup but I need to see more from Mixon. If we run enough nickel we can bring MLB around slowly and TBH we ran a lot of nickel last year and should run even more this year. We don't stay in our 4-3 base a lot and when our MLB is ready we will give him some better looks BUT JRM and Maggitt are both capable of setting alignment and fulfilling the QB of the D role the MLB/ILB usually provides.
That's not to say MLB/ILB isn't a weakspot. It is but because we run so much nickel we may be better off than we think and have more time to break the new guy in.

He's talented enough but he's not going to supplant a senior with that much experience. TKjr's biggest problem has been that he's so very green. That said, he should see a lot more snaps this year.
EDIT: I could be wrong as I'm too lazy to doublecheck but I think it would be Randolph he'd take the job from and he's just too good.

I'm really pumped about the defense. I think our front seven especially will be elite for next several years. A little worried about Moesely at the other corner opposite Sutton but I think we will be fine.

How comfortable do you guys feel with Jancek and Martinez?
Posted on 7/20/15 at 6:42 pm to Prof
If I understand correctly, the safeties are pretty much interchangeable. Im sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. I don't see anyone taking Randolph's job, but who knows.
I think they have done a good job so far. The defense looked so much better last year than it did during the preceding few years, which isn't saying all that much, but still.

I feel like they've done a pretty good job in the past two years and I HATED the hires when it happened.
