Starting a research on where I want to go as a summer vacation destination. I really know very little about this place but looks freaking beautiful and has peaked my interest. Would like to know what you good people think of Gatlinburg.
Alittle about me so you understand what I'm looking for as far as a vacation. I've been to Nashville and New Orleans many times for vacations. Looking elsewhere now that is closer to KC as far as drive time. I'm single, still like to party on occasion. Does this place have any type of night life...women, bars etc..Or is this a more family friendly vacation spot? Place looks awesome and just wondering while I'm looking around.

Compared to Nash/NO there's not much of a nightlife (that I've experienced). If hiking is something you're interested in then you could definitely get a cabin ad explore.
It's a fun area but I've only gone with groups to go play put-put or something of that nature. It's pretty family friendly/oriented.

I went to ripleys aquarium of the smokies for the first time since 7 th grade a couple weeks ago. Forgot how much I enjoyed that place.

Very family oriented and very touristy. I know many people love it, but I can't stand Gatlinburg.
I would suggest Asheville for the same beautiful outdoor stuff and a good nightlife/great beer scene.

We went for Memorial Day weekend once. It felt like I was on Spring Break for senior citizens. Seriously, they were all in a wheelchair. If you're into GILFs this might be the place for you.

Does chatt have a decent nightlife? It's been years since I've been there for any length of time and was too young then for that kinda stuff. Me and gf are planning on going somewhere in May and chatt came to mind, I love the aquarium

Chatt has a pretty decent little downtown. I know it is much better than when I was a kid. I did a weekend thing with a chick last fall and we had a good time. Good balance of outdoor stuff and plenty of good food/drink places. We ended up catching some live music as a nightcap and it was pretty good.
I am a fan of Chattanooga.

Chattanoogan here, there is plenty to do here, lots of hiking, in may you could rent a boat and cruise down the river, downtown is fun at night. If you are looking for a show type place you can google the vaudeville cafe.
at night it is always fun to walk across some of the bridges, check out coolidge park during the day.
if anyone has kids I would always suggest the Creative Discovery Museum, just a block from the Aquarium. (I am a volunteer there)
Then you can head up Lookout Mountain and check out Point Park and Rock City (one of my favorites). about half way up the mountain there is also Ruby Falls (fun if not a bit pricey). there is also some relatively new zip lining right there near Ruby Falls as well
For the TL;DR crowd: Get some brochures, it's really really hard not to have fun here.
Here is the "walking bridge" as we locals call it, a definate must see if you visit.
It is right on the riverfront, speaking of which...

Hate to say it but the "quaintness" of Gatlinburg wore off some time ago. Nothing but a traffic jam and Ripley side show BS.

Gatlinburg got ruined by Alabama rednecks and Pigeon Forge.
Go to Blue Ridge, GA instead.

I would second that. I love Asheville's energy. Also, some unbelievable food. Breakfast at The Early Girl is reason enough to go there.

Forgot to mention that there is a good chance you can catch a good show at Orange Peel or somewhere on a Fri/Sat.
I havent eaten at that place, but we had Cathead last time we were there and the breakfast there was very good. They are true cathead biscuits and I had the one with fried green tomatoes and country ham. It felt like a little bit of lightning was touching my penis as I was eating it. Also had tuna tartare at Wicked Weed brewery...pretty sophisticated menu for a brewery. Probably the best beer in town, too.

Usually some pretty good music at Jack of the Wood on Fri/Sat as well.
