I am not sure how losing to USCe and Vandy make that a valid interpretation and not just something you would expect to hear from Mike Hamilton.

A real good comment I saw on SDS:

"Perhaps you’re the one who isn’t up on Jones’ situation; to say that we’ve improved from where we were when he took over is not an accurate assessment of his accomplishments. Tennessee had nowhere to go but up after we fired Dooley so while we did experience growth EARLY under Jones–even the 5-7 team his 1st season was better than what we’d seen for a few years–the real story is that he’s a very poor gameday coach and is awful at both player development and attracting talented position coaches.

(He’s been through 5 Coordinators in 4 years and numerous other position coaches have left or been axed to cover up his incompetence.)

I’m really still just astonished that so many fans at UT and outside the base, are still defending him. It either points to their poor football analysis, or maybe more likely, their inability to spot bad leadership. And if he’s still coaching UT in 2 years, we’ll be back to losing to the likes of Vandy and South Carolina."

Not written by me.

Reading the article, Currie doesn't seem to give Butch a ringing endorsement.

I hope this Currie guy doesn't suck because our AD is a flaming bag of shite right now.

This is from the article I am referencing.

Q: What are reasonable expectations for football at Tennessee?

A: “The expectations are defined by the history. Tennessee is a championship-level program and that’s where you want to get to. But one of the things I’ve learned from Coach (Bill) Snyder at K-State is what you have to focus on, and that is, are we getting better today than we were yesterday? If you get away from that principal and think about where you want to get to eventually, you’re doing it wrong. We’ve got to focus on where we are today, and will we be better tomorrow, and continue to build through that process. We all know how competitive the conference is, and how competitive college football is. Who would think that Kansas State University would have the best facilities in the Big 12 conference, better than Texas? Kansas State does. The reality of it is, as universities have been able to generate more revenue, everybody has been able to build good facilities, everybody has been able to provide great academic support, and as all those things have happened around the country in all the leagues, it becomes even more competitive. I think Coach Jones is on the right trajectory.”

LINK

This sounds enough like a good enough endorsement to wonder WTF is he thinking?

And notice the reference to fund raising. It would gag a maggot.

Q: Have you spoken to Phil Fulmer since you got the job?

A: “As you know, Coach Fulmer is the architect of the greatest period of Tennessee football in the modern era. He’s been an inspiration to me throughout my career and he’ll continue to be honored in all the right ways. And that’s the period of time, and the kind of accomplishments, that we want to be. That represents what we want to be, and we’re going to work hard to get back to that level.”

Same link.

Not groveling at Johnny Majors' feet at least.

You have to think about recruiting and current players buying in when ADs make statements. Action is the only valid thing to follow in this situation.

If Butch goes 8-4 or better I think he might be safe another year, in which case cheer on the recruiting class as much as anything. Or maybe the unthinkable happens and Butch's scrub arse gets gud.

You are right. Lyle may hear something different in private.

But I think it behooves the fans to let Lyle know we are not fooled or pleased.

I have no idea how it is done behind close doors, but I would think Currie has laid out his expectations of Butch. Going 7-5/8-4 and losing to every good team on schedule would be the worst case scenario. I think Butch might get one more year if that happens.

That seems likely. Hamilton freaked out when attendance dropped off. That might be the benchmark for Currie too.
