A little clarification/timeline on Hurd...

As I said last night, the post on VN was 100% correct (obviously, it was his uncle).
But here is a little clarification on the timeline of events this season.
Hurd came in to the season with the same attitude he had the past two seasons (well liked by his teammates and known as a very tough guy who was going to do whatever it took on gameday) and was running as hard as possible. He made it well known he was headed to the NFL after the season, but no real concerns about his attitude or selfishness.
He began getting frustrated with his role around the Florida game after taking some big hits in that game, telling some people that he was sick of being hurt all the time.
The hit against UGA is what really seemed to change things. I am still not sure what the diagnosis there was, but he was injured for sure but it was not diagnosed as a concussion.
During that following week, he had a lot of people around him telling him different things. Some telling him just to sit out the rest of the season and head to the draft, some telling him he needed to change positions, some telling him to transfer to a pro-style offense. He was getting treatment around the clock all week and was cleared to play against Texas A&M, but on Thursday afternoon he told the coaches he wasn't going to play and that his body wasn't ready.
Alabama week was pretty quiet, he came back obviously, but didn't play very well.
During the bye week and S. Carolina week, he told Tennessee coaches and teammates that he wanted to make the move to wide receiver. Coaches were not open to it and teammates began to grumble, especially with him being needed much more at RB with Kamara's injury. He said he would be happy to learn the position and come back to Tennessee next year as a WR. He brought up life after football, saying he's taken way too many hits over the last few years at RB and isn't willing to take more for the sake of his long term health.
After taking 3 straight shots in goal line situations against South Carolina, he removed himself from that game.
Last night at the team meeting, the heat was turned up by some leaders on the team (not just on him, but on a large number of guys on the team). The meeting was definitely not just focused on one guy, but after that meeting Hurd let people know he was leaving to go somewhere where he could play WR.

That is what he has been telling people. TE seems like a better fit, but I think he could be a solid WR as well, especially if he loses 10-15 pounds.

Are we calling Jennings and Barnett the leaders? Seems they are the only vocal ones.
Edit: I agree that TE might be a good fit for him. That's where he had NFL value at running back because of his hands and blocking ability. He would be a tough matchup if he could figure the position out.

Jesus, Hurd sounds like a pussy...if he's complaining about hits on this level wait until his arse gets lit up in the NFL.

If he wants to move to TE we've all seen what OM can do with them (minus the shite show season currently on display)

Nobody would play Hurd at WR. And if he doesn't like getting hit at RB he sure as hell wouldn't like getting laid out the way WRs do when they go up in the air knowing damn well they're about to get punished in mid-air. At least at RB, you can often decide to be the guy giving the hit as opposed to the one receiving it.
Now at TE he'd make sense and could quite possibly be a star but here's what I don't understand - back when he was being recruited people kept saying he was too big to be a RB and that he should play TE but he was pretty adamant about not playing TE. Now suddenly he wants to play WR and maybe TE? And to add to all this his uncle kept making the claim that it was scheme holding Hurd back and that idea has been pushed on VN for years as well as elsewhere and has even been claimed as a reason for Hurd being upset and yet instead of transferring to play in the I he wants to change positions.
This sounds flaky as frick.

Great info.
Unfortunate situation all the way around. I remember scouts saying Hurd was best suited to be a TE, WR, or a S. Wonder why the staff wouldn't give him a shot elsewhere?
Any info on potential staff changes?

Hurd was basically told to leave.

What is going on here? Why is this guy transferring? Wasn't he y'alls #1 back?
This is just a weird time for a guy to leave the program.

Are you trying to say that WRs take more punishment than RBs?

Weird situation man. I'd love to know what has transpired behind closed doors the last few days.

Not more but it's different and getting nailed while you're in the air and helpless is a lot different than running over or into someone, particularly when you consider that the uncle is claiming that he's got a back injury. Consider that Justin Hunter got hit so hard in the NFL as an WR that it lacerated his spleen. That's the kind of damage to internal organs that usually only comes from car crashes. Playing WR ain't nice and easy or a break from RB - just a different kind of abuse. You may not get contact as often but the hits can actually be worse individually as opposed to the more constant contact at RB. Both are brutal positions in different ways.
