According to Rivals here were the top10 pro-style 2013 candidates. Only two guys were rated as 5 stars. I'll list them in order of how good Rivals thought they were. How has this list fared in college?
1)Max Browne - 5 star - committed to USC.
He is a backup currently at USC and has never started. In his limited time playing the cleanup role in blowouts he has went 3 of 7 on passing situations for a 42.9% completion percentage. He currently carries a QB rating of 78.9. Certainly not a lot of data yet, but that doesn't look too good so far.
2)Christian Hackenburg - 5 star - committed to Penn St. Unlike Browne, Hackenburg has been starting at Penn St. Are his numbers good? Not really. Although he has passed for 5900 yards in his two years there he has went 501 of 876 for a completion percentage below 60% of only 57% That has led to a mediocre QB rating of only 121.7. Certainly not the 5 star material Rivals made him out to be.
That's it for the 5 stars now onto the 4 stars.
3)Hayden Rettig - originally committed to LSU as the highest rated 4 star pro-style QB. Couldn't make it there so transferred to Rutgers. There are zero stats on him because he hasn't did anything noteworthy. Probably a bust as I'm sure LSU already knows.
4)Shane Morris - Committed to Michigan as the second highest 4 star QB prospect. He's seen the field some as a backup where he has completed 43 passes. That would be great except that was on 87 attempts which gives him a paltry 49.4% completion percentage and a QB rating of only 73.3. Hmmmm...
5)Jeremy Johnson - Committed to Auburn as a 4 star and not the highest one at that. In his two years so far he has been relegated to backup behind Nick Marshall although he has been placed in the starter's role several times over that period. He started as true frosh in some games winning SEC freshmen of the week both times. He's even started a game against a power 5 bowl team where he torched them badly. How do his numbers look though? He has went 57 out of 78 for a completion percentage 73% and carries a QB rating of 198.6. Hmmm, maybe Rivals needs to get better at establishing who deserves what rating. Looks like a 5 star to me and by far the best QB from the candidates.
6)Ryan Burns - committed to Stanford as a 4 star. He has thrown one and only one pass against UC Davis in a blowout in the first game of the year in 2014 for Stanford. He completed it at least and well that's it. Didn't play in 2013 and you may as well say he didn't play in 2014 either. Jury is still out on this guy.
7)Cody Thomas - committed to Oklahoma as a 4 star. Didn't play in 2013 and finally saw some backup time in 2014. He went 30 for 66 for a completion percentage of 45.4%. That led to his Qb rating of 86.9. Hmmm...
8)Jared Goff - committed to California as a 4 star. Now this guy deserves some respect. In his two years at Cal he has passed for about 7500 yards WHILE maintaining a completion percentage of 61% as a starter. That is good. 60% completion percentage and above is good. He currently has a QB rating of 135.4.
9)Danny Etling - committed to Purdue as a 4 star. Has started some and played some in 2013/2014. Ultimately though he lost his starting role in 2014 and here's why. He has a completion percentage of about 55% and a QB rating of about 109 in addition to throwing about as many picks as TD's.
10)Bucky Hodges - committed to VaTech as a 4 star. Is now playing WR for VaTech. That is all that needs to be said.
So let's see, out of Rivals top 10 pro-style QB's only TWO of them would I consider worthy of any kind of 4 star rating or above so far. Jeremy Johnson and Jared Goff.
Jeremy Johnson should have been a 5 star. He certainly had the stats to justify it in high school but never received it due to outright bias. He was named Mr. Football in Alabama which goes to the best football player from our state every year. During his senior year he completed over 67% of his passes, threw 31 TD's and over 3000yards, scored another 9 TD's on the ground while rushing for 706 yards, and carried a 129.1 QB rating. He did this while competing at the highest level(6A) against future 4 and 5 star div1 prospects some of whom are now on Alabama's roster and Auburn's.
For comparison, here's what one of Rival's 5 stars did his senior year. Christian Hackenburg's senior season went like this. He threw for 2100 yards scoring 24 Td's, carried a 92.1 QB rating, rushed for 436 yards scoring 3 more TD's.

Jeremy Johnson zomg
Has done nothing in college to warrant his rating being incorrect at a 4 star.

A former Cornerback from UGA beat out Jeremy Johnson.

QB recruiting has always been a total crapshoot.
For one, you have to take into account the type of competition the recruit is playing against, but how much of that is balanced out by being able to play with other studs? You're not going to look like an all-world qb if you are passing to a bunch of stone hands white boys who run 4.9 on a good day, even if you play against terrible competition. On the other hand, you are going to look good if you are passing to Calvin Ridley or Tyron Johnson.
Even TD-INT ratio can be deceiving. Did he throw an INT because of a bad read, or was it because the receiver quit on the route? How many TDs were dropped by the receivers?
