The kid is from Baton Rouge, probably didn't take much of a push to get him tbh.

Meh, just the right mix of circumstances. Jones probably realized that Newman wasn't coming to LSU and Sampson was looking for a new school after Lavin was fired a St. Johns. Plus, the rosters at Sampson's other choices (UCLA and Cal) were starting to fill up. Just a good hometown player that kind of fell into LSU's lap

As someone mentioned above..We were mutual 2nd-3rd choices for each other We had a spot open and all signs pointed toward newman going to MSU or Kentucky. At the same time, the places he wanted to go were filling up. It definitely helped that he's a local.

It's not like he couldn't have still went to St. John's.

I also think distance from home concerns become stronger after he re-opened his recruitment.
