Former OSU OL Marcelys Jones to Transfer

SO OL Marcelys Jones played in 3 games for OSU last season as a true freshman. He played mostly first-team snaps at OG and C during spring ball in '15.
He was a 4* Army All-American as a recruit in 2014 who, despite committing to OSU early, was rumored to flip to UK late in the process.
Now he's transferring out and UK is a potential landing spot. As a UK fan, I'm all for UK landing all of the talented OL that it can.

Saw on Twitter he was cleared to communicate with UK.

Sounds like he just wasn't happy there and wants to do something different. I don't think there's necessarily anything nefarious going on.

"It was a shocker to me as well as everybody (at Ohio State)," Ginn said. "I think he feels he needs to find another place to go I guess. That's about all I know."
Jones played sparingly for the Buckeyes during his freshman season, seeing the field in Ohio State's 66-0 win over Kent State. It seemed like Jones might have had a shot to crack the two-deep on Ohio State's depth chart this season, and he even saw some time at center in the spring.
But Ginn said Jones wants to explore opportunities to play elsewhere.
"He made the decision," Ginn said. "He just needed to do something different."

He wasn't asked to leave per se, but the writing has been on the wall for marcelys and osu for months.
He has physical skills but he has been called the laziest player they've ever coached by our staff.
He really just needs to grow up.

Actually, in April your OL coach said he was doing well and progressing. He was 1st team C and LG during the spring, likely due to some starter injuries, but as a SO was going to be no worse than 2nd string.
Your best OL called him the best athlete in the [OL] room.
Sure doesn't sound like there was any "writing on the wall."
I don't know that he will end up at UK, but the kid can play.

Believe what you want. I never said he didn't have skill.
But I promise you this has been known for some time. He is really disliked by our staff, plain and simple.
But i guess a Kentucky fan would know more about it, I'm sure.

He probably was lazy because he was depressed to still be in Ohio, when his heart was in Lexington all along?

So lazy he moved up to the 2-deep as a sophomore and had played some time at C (per the article I posted).
We'll enjoy him if he chooses to come to Lexington though.

I hope it works out for him and UK. If he gets his act together he has the ability to be a good one.
He just wasn't ready to work yet. Maybe your coaching staff will be better motivators.

Good luck to Jones at Kentucky.
Re: 1st team during spring ball
Most of the first team was out for spring ball. There were a couple of nagging injuries and some guys were 2000 rep guys. Once you hit 2000 reps Ohio State limits additional reps during spring ball to develop depth and avoid overworking guys.

There is strong logic in your words.

There are only 15 practices in the spring. Jones was taking first string reps back in April.
I'd be interested to know how many reps you think college players are taking per practice to hit 2000 in the early part of April.

2000 career reps. I can go through the spring game roster and point out the actual starters that didn't participate. The number was significant.
You got a good player but let's not pretend that he was something that he wasn't at Ohio State. If he was going to see the two deep he wouldn't have transferred.

Ohio State held out a number of players. Remember that they played a long season, much longer than KY. You need to rest the body during the S&C in the off-season.
They will perform better during the fall after having sat out some during the spring since they are not newbies who are in dire need of reps for development. Thus, the younger guys that are in need of reps were able to get needed reps.

Refresh my memory....what is the over/under until Meyer's recruits will start committing violent felonies?
** edit: sorry Buckeye fans, I just couldn't help myself. Based off history it was just too easy of a target!
