Mullen back to his old bag of tricks has reeled in two relatively unknown diamond recruits from the state of Louisiana. They are Cam Dantzler a 6'2" 175 lb HS qb from Hammond who projects as a CB/S and Dontrell Allen a super athletic 6'0" 180 lb corner from east St. John who DBS coach Deshea Townsend fell in love with.

Anything below a 4 star is a diamond in the rough. Nobody really expects those people to become anything other than a decent college player. 4 and 5 star guys are expected to win the Heisman and be first round draft picks.

What?

How is Dak not a diamond? He was a 3* QB who turned out to be the best QB in the conference. I'd say that's pretty diamond-esque.

Low 3 stars are considered diamonds now a days. Heck Willie Allen didn't have a 247 profile until he committed to us.

Because we essentially his only sec offer until Lsu came in at the last minute. I consider a kid with only SEC offer or one power 5 offer a diamond.

eh, I've seen some 3 stars with offer lists that looked like 4 stars.

but to be fair I don't think Dak was offered by anyone else in the SEC IIRC? So that'd obviously make him a diamond.

This ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This is also why Dan Mullen consistently gets torched on the rant for not being a good recruiter. Yet he's consistently won with 3 stars he's redshirted and developed.

So, 36% of drafted recruits are "diamonds?"

Look at Allen and Dantzlers offers. Neither had major offers and State was their only SEC offer

You're not factoring in lots of drafted players come from 1-AA schools and non power 5 schools. Marquis Colston for example

Look, I think Dan is a great coach. But he hasn't done anything consistently yet.

These guys will be 3 stars too. Or they already are...isn't that pretty much the default anyway?

5 straight winning seasons and bowls at Mississippi State is pretty consistent considering our programs history.
