Would you rather win 9 games 8 out of 10 years or compete for a title every 4

years perennially but possibly be mediocre to average in the other years? Not including a bowl with my 9 win threshold.
This should be a good discussion.
And I mean just win 9 games in the first case, not anything else. Spinoff on a discussion that was started in another thread.

You play to win the game.
Compete for a title every 4 years.

Is this a Mark Richt thread? Sounds like a Mark Richt thread.

Titles are the ultimate goal

As a Bama fan these both seem like steps down to me.

Would you rather start an offseason thread during the season or an in season thread during the offseason?

You down voted didn't you? Don't be so sensitive. Jay Jacobs was just on the SEC Network talking about the same topic the OP posed.

This comparison would work better for college basketball. Would you rather root for UCONN coached by Jim Calhoun who basically averaged one NC every 5-7 seasons (1999, 2004, 2011) but also have inconsistent years where they don't even make the NCAA Tournament or root for Kansas with Bill Self who's won the Big 12 conference title 10 consecutive years but have only have one NC to show for it?

More of a Kirby Smart thread, although the premise is suspect. It could have just as easily been worded, "would you rather win 10 games a year or hire Derek Dooley and destroy your football program for the foreseeable future".
Since Kirby's head coaching skills are completely unknown (except three mediocre to poor performances), there's probably a better chance of getting Dooley-like results than making the playoff every 4 years. I enjoyed Mark Richt's ten win seasons myself, but lots of people prefer to risk everything for a long shot thrill.

What's considered competing for a title? Making the playoff? In the final game?

Compete for a title. Easy.

I just dont understand this POV. 10 win seasons mean jack shite if you never get any hardware.
Kirby may not be the guy, but Richt sure wasn't.

That's probably because you can't navigate beyond the groupthink that infests the internet. All the Mark Richt memes like "Mark Richt has lost control", "Mark Richt has no discipline", "Mark Richt can't win the big one", "Mark Richt teams don't play inspired", "Mark Richt can never win a title"; those are not facts, they're assumptions based on bad information or poor logic.
Vince Dooley became Georgia's head coach in 1964. If we'd had the internet back in those days, he wouldn't have lasted long enough to win the championship in 1981. The internet denizens would have been absolutely certain, at some point, that the quickest path to a championship was to jump on the coaching carousel, even if it meant hiring some guy who had never been a head coach at all. And, even if that blew up in their face, they'd have insisted 'til the day they died that Dooley would never have won it all. And most likely as a result, UGA would not have a national championship in the modern era.
The amazing thing is, Richt has consistently won at a higher rate than Dooley (don't even mention Goff and Donnan), and came very close two, or maybe three times to reaching the championship. But the internet geniuses had him pegged, and somehow managed to ignore all the factors that make it just a bit more difficult to win it all at Georgia. But Kirby's figuring that out right now, because at plenty of other schools, Ledbetter and Rivers (and maybe Barnett) would be available to play this weekend. And unless Kirby manages to be super impressive (i.e., win big soon) with lesser talent and more games lost to suspensions, he may find it's very difficult to reel in #1 recruiting classes at Georgia. Like Steve Spurrier said, some of our competitors offer scholarships that are worth more than ours.
