Would you fire this coach?

Your coach comes in and takes over a program that has fallen on tough times. They had one of their worst runs in school history the previous few years before the new coach arrived. He shows up, turns things around and by year 4 wins a national title. He wins at a 75% clip for 9 seasons, including 2 national titles and 4 conference titles.

However, things begin to slowly fall apart. Over the next 4 years he only wins 60% of his games, and barely wins more than half of his conference games. The last 2 seasons see losing conference records and barely making bowl games.

Would you fire him? Would most schools fire him? Would most "elite" schools fire him?

This is tough to determine without any other outside factors. How is his recruiting?

We don't know - Tom Lemming is in diapers at the time and there is no 247 Composite.

I would say give him another two years, not knowing any other information. If he is able to improve off those 2 years then give more time but if he is still just barely averaging more conference wins than losses then he gone.

GOOD ANSWER ROCKIEE

However, the situation does mirror a lot of the current ones (minus maybe an extra national title). Fulmer, Mack Brown.........3-4 years of things going downhill and they got the ax.

For 3 NCs in 13, only the most elite schools should be firing him.

To be fair, I was still answering it more towards being in today's world. If this was happening in the 60's/70's coaches like that would get a lifetime contact.

You don't think Saban has the equivalent of a lifetime contract?

I think that if Saban had back-to-back 6-6/7-5 seasons that he would clearly get a 3rd, but there would be major grumbling and thoughts about whether things had passed him by.

It depends...is he a drunk...then no...all of the best HCs are alcoholics (scientific fact).

Different world back then.

Think about it this way - you probably pay either of your coordinators as much money a year as it took to run your entire football program in 1970.

I would think 2 national titles and 4 conference titles would give him enough equity in the program to be able to survive a downturn. I would say he deserves 1 more year to turn it around. 3 losing seasons in a row should be enough to fire him unless there were outside forces at play.

Although I see now you're talking about back in the day. I would keep him a little longer just because coaching hires were such a crapshoot back then.

If the internet had been around back then, fans would have been howling for his head on a platter after those years. IF and that's a big if, the AD was confident enough in the man and secure enough in his job to hold off the mob at the gates for one more year, they would see their patience rewarded.

I know I sound like an old geezer talking and I'm probably older than most on here but I don't consider myself an old by any stretch. But the "Instant Gratification" aspect of our society is probably one of the most repulsive and degrading developments to have ever occurred. We, as a species, need to slow down a little.

Yes I would.

And Bryant won 85% in his 1st 9 years not 75%.
