I think it's gene chizik by a mile. When he had both Newton and Malzahn he was 14-0. When he had only Malzahn he was 16-10. And when he had neither he was 8-28. Some people may argue for Larry Coker, but Coker never went worse than 7-6. I was thinking of Danny Ford since he did awful at Arkansas, but Ford had a better record at Clemson than I realized. Some long ago national champions like Duffy Daugherty (Michigan state) and Ben Schatzwalder(Syracuse) had pretty mediocre records, but that's because they retired a lot later than they should have a la Bowden and paterno.

Well your reasoning sounds pretty solid. I will just go ahead and throw it on the fact board.

Fact board

Worst national champion ever = Auburn.

Thread title should read "Besides Gene Chizik, who is the worst coach to win a National Title?"

Coker is at least a strong contender for #2 but I don't think he's anywhere close to as bad as chizik. He never went 3-9 or worse which chizik has done 3 times.

Brown was in the middle of a 102-15 stretch from 01-09 when he won his title. Obviously his last 4 years were pretty bad though.

Bobby Ross - Georgia Tech 103-101-2 overall college record.

Bobby Ross took the Chargers to the Super Bowl... His record at The Citadel and Army are what cloud his overall.

Hmm interesting- didn't think of Ross. But I think he usually took over programs in bad shape.

Chizik
Coker
Bobby Ross

I'm gonna go sacrilegious here and say Gene Stallings. Outside of 92 he was meh. 91 we were 11-1 but won a lot 10-7 games. 94 we went 12-1 but lost to a florida team in the SECCG we should have beaten by two touchdowns.
Had everybody back in 93 from 92 team and I don't think we finished in top 25 (he kinda gets a pass on injuries in 93) 96 we lose to a dreadful state team and got absolutely rung up by florida in the SECCG. During his tenure I was afraid bama was getting satisfied with 10 wins. Expectations had dropped off since the Perkins days. U get what u expect. I just think after 92 he kinda rode it out till retirement. Dubose sucked but people don't understand how crappy Stallings had recruited in the years after the nc. Solid coach but had no business winning a natty.

You need to start a post with "The ugliest guy to sleep with Kate Upton." In the end, he still has a NC.

Stallings won about 82% at Bama if you count the 9 forfeits as wins.
