Did anyone lose respect for the Heisman trophy when Peyton Manning lost to Charles Woodson? Personally, that was the last year I watched the show.

No. The O'Brian is a he award for quarterbacks.

I was pissed Mathieu didn't win it in 2011.

Woodson performed bigger in the biggest stages which won him the award. Had Manning managed to beat Florida that year, he probably wins the award. Nevertheless, there was a ridiculous amount of talent as finalist that year. Randy Moss, Peyton Manning & Charles Woodson, all future NFL Hall of Famers & arguably the best players to ever play their respected positions.

Back in those days ESPN had a real hard on for the Big 10 and a defensive player winning the award.

'97 was a perfect storm and showed how much influence ESPN can have when it comes to national awards.

I will say this...Nebraska was the better of the two National Champions that year.

Tennessee played them in the orange bowl and it was a massacre. We actually had a chance to win the NC that year but Michigan beat Washington State earlier in the day and the Vols were deflated.

Nebraska certainly took advantage.

I was upset about it, but I'm over it.

Paul Hornung over Johnny Majors was the bigger travesty.

That's pretty sad that you haven't watched in 20 years because one hall of famer beat out another. I don't see how you can have a gripe with Woodson who was making plays both ways.

Yep. The only player to ever win the award that played on a team with a losing record. Correct?

tBias was real from ESPN back then.

Woodson won based solely on ESPN'S campaign.

That's why UT fans are still pissed.

I can understand being disappointed Manning lost but don't pretend Woodson was chopped liver. David Boston was one of the better receivers in the nation that year & Woodson owned him in from of a national audience.

Some sunshine pumping:

Dobbs will be a real threat to win the award next year if he can continue to develop this year and may contend this year.

Not sure how I feel about it however.

I'd love to see Manning pose with Dobbs in a picture of the century for UT fans if he does win it.

Yes Woodson won the Heisman only because ABC and ESPN pushed very hard for him over the other candidates.

The play that wins it for him is the td return.

Champ would have a better year the next season and was not even in the top 4 the next season,

Voter nullification cost Peyton the award, with many voters no placing him in the top 3, Payton was left off near 60 ballots in the far west and near 65 from the mid west.

Champ's stats were much better than Woodson's and he finished 7th in the voting the next season.

Because the number of winners in the far west and big 10, that block is now normally one of main factors in outcome for the Heisman race.
