Why would an SEC starter go behind his training staff's back to buy supplements?

At LSU, just about everything is provided to players - Muscle Milk, etc. I'm sure it's the same way at Florida and every other SEC school.

What could a kid possibly be trying to do by going around his trainers, if not get something they can't/won't give him?

This isn't the first time this has happened, IIRC.

Have to always be careful.

I know in Jarmon's case, he was using it at home over the summer to gain weight/bulk and has the bad piss test not long after camp started.

There's pressure for these kids to perform at insane levels in college, especially in a major conference. I feel bad for players that lose a whole season over something like that. Especially when you consider you have schools like UNC just trudging along with no punishment for outright academic fraud.

I'm not convinced that it was an "honest mistake" but sometimes the lure of fame and success is too much for these kids.

Will Grier probably didn't want to go through his life being the third most famous Grier sibling so he tried to take a shortcut.

A lot of kids at that age make stupid mistakes. Maybe he didn't know if he was going to be the starter and heard from somewhere this supplement was legal and would help him add muscle/weight. I doubt he took it knowing the NCAA banned something in it. Yes he should of got it approved through the athletic department prior to taking it, but players don't always think before acting, especially when they are trying to get a leg up on their competition.

I heard that Grier is auctioning off a used hypodermic needle with all proceeds going to South Carolina flood victims.

The real question is why they wouldn't get the heads up on a NCAA test.

Every player in the league skates this test for weed and other stuff, how could he not lay off the juice for a couple of weeks and pass?

Don't roids only stay in your system a few days?

I made this post in the main thread, but I think it applies more here:

I feel sorry for him in the same sense that I would feel sorry for an otherwise good person getting pulled over for DWI. You can be a perfectly good, honest person and still have a lapse in judgement and make a mistake - especially when you're young and under immense pressure.

I can see his train of thought, needing to perform at his best to win the starting job and then getting almost "trapped" into doing it long term to keep the results you showed during that time. Not to mention leading a popular NCAA football team to a 6-0 start and having all eyes on you. It would be hard to quit and risk your play going down the shitter with all that pressure on you. There's no arguing that he didn't know it was wrong to begin with, or could've at least found out it was though. It's just one of those things that you never foresee happening to yourself at that age - especially in his position - like the aforementioned DWI.

I know for a fact UF training staff is constantly drilling it into the heads of Gator athletes that every single supplement they take should be run by the trainers first.
