Why would Adidas pay players?

Seriously what benefit is it for random 5 star to attend an Adidas school? I get why a booster would do something like this.
I'm guessing they think pissing away a few million over the course of who knows how long is worth it if they land someone who turns out to be the next Jordan or Kobe?
There are no guarantees the player signs with them post college. Just doesn't seem like it's worth the hassle or risks.

I’d imagine it’s worth the hassle, risk, and money if they’re doing it. Somehow I doubt all of this just started recently.

The sport is built around athletes.

Why they didnt just pay 1 player. Not rocket science here.
They probably arent doing anything nike, and under armour is doing. Also, adidas is probably use to paying teenagers in this way for international soccer, so higher ups probably put "why haven't you yet?" type of pressure.

Adidas knows star players will be on TV a lot more, and their highlights will dominate the internet and sports shows.
They want star players wearing their logo.

Most athletes sign shoe deals with the same company their college used. Get a 5 star to go to an Addidas school, he shines in college and your brand is more visible, then he signs with you as his shoe company as an NBA player and you make millions off his shoe sells.

I mean if they're paying the family $100,000 it's pretty much guaranteed that kid will stay with them
ETA: Not sure why you're singling out Adidas, all of them are doing this. It literally says in the report a rival apparel company out-bid Adidas for Bowen so they had to raise their price

Search for any player's picture and just below their face on their jersey is the brand logo. Adidas, Nike, UnderArmour.
They're paying for advertising.

Steph Curry was noted in some stock valuations of Under Armour as justification for higher share value, from ~$60 a share to ~$100 a share.
Also, Nike Basketball is weak right now. Kyrie Irving was the second best selling signature shoe for Nike BB last year. Adidas has a glut of young basketball players that are probably more valuable to them as NOT NIKE then as signature shoe drivers.

Reebok offered 18 yr old HS SR Lebron James $10m to NOT take the meeting he had schedule the next day with Nike.

Bingo. and when a star athlete makes a great play, that play lives forever on Youtube and sports highlight shows.
If a guy makes and incredible catch wearing an Adidas logo, that Adidas logo will be in that highlight forever.

Could you imagine Lebron in Reebok

Yes. I could imagine him in any brand that paid him. The mystique behind Nike is so weird. It’s just a brand, and a low quality one at that.
