The guy just fricking quits on his team mid season? Who does that? Bobby Patrino.
Show little class and finish out the season with the players YOU recruited.
And btw..."Retirement" is something people spend a lifetime saving for. Somebody like Spurrier who was financially able to "Retire" a decade ago is just a "quitter" at this juncture. I lost a lot of respect for that guy and i think he should be called out for leaving mid season.

Bobby quit midseason to take another job.
OBC quit b/c his heart isnt in it and he thinks his staff can do a better job w/o him.
But go ahead and pretend its the same thing.

Dude...relax. If we're okay with it, why the hell are all of y'all so damn up in arms about it?
And he didn't retire...he resigned.

You think his players are happy that their coach just up and left them mid season? He made a commitment to that team that he didn't fulfill bc he quit. He is a coward of a man and unless he had a serious illness he has no excuse

Actually not a bitch move at all.
It's going to happen one way or another.. They don't have an SEC win at all.. he's getting out of the way because obviously he isn't getting it done for them..
Why wait now? They aren't competing for anything at this point any more.. and it will actually help with recruiting now to get someone else in there.. rather than kids know he's just going to leave later..
What good to does it do for him to stay at this point? Seriously?

he'd finish 1-7 or 0-8 in the SEC

Actually, his players have been quite understanding and empathetic.

I see your argument, but you could also argue that he truly believed the program would be in better hands if he stepped away. There is no easy way to do that mid-season.
What if Spurrier at the helm lost 5 of the next 5 games, but the interim coach only lost 2/5. The point is to rebuild for next season when clearly they are not a good team at this point in time.

Stephen Garcia tried to kinda call him out on it on PF. He said Spurrier was sending 'mixed signals' with the timing.
Plus, the community is reeling from the flooding, they needed all their big guns to step up and set an example, despite their personal feelings. He took the spotlight, and made it about him. Could've waited until the end of the season IMHO. You make a decision to coach, stick out the entire year, no matter how hard or difficult. This mid-season quitting is for punks or those being fired.

He's 70 years old. Why give him shite for it? He doesn't have time to waste and as an AD I don't think a rebuilding project with a coach of his age is the best idea.
Good luck to Steve on the links.

Because that what you do.... you don't quit on a team when this aren't going your way.... would it be acceptable for all the players to quit also bc "they don't have anything to play for".
He committed himself to that team. That team busted their arse for him in the off season. And he leaves halfway through. total bullshite man and i truly feel sorry for that team.

I don't understand why you care? He felt this was best for the University and most of Gamecock nation agrees with that. Get over it.

Who's to say the administration wanted him to finish it out?
He also said in his press conference he was resigning, not retiring. Retiring certainly suggests it's on your own terms.
That all said, even if he decided without assistance to go ahead and step away then good for him for recognizing his heart isn't in it anymore and he wasn't going to waste his player's time.

Now that's rich with irony.

He did what he thought was best for the team.
if they are allright with it, why are your bowels in an uproar?

They can start figuring out their next head coach early and before most other schools. You don't risk blowing up the recruiting list late in the season.
Honestly, a lame duck coach is never much of coach to have so I would prefer he move on now if I was South Carolina.

To be fair, Pastedes (USC president) asked him to finish the year. Spurrier just feels this is what's best. He said he doesn't believe in finishing out the season and just announcing your retirement because it creates a disconnect with accountability for players if they know he won't be the coach after this year. This gives Shawn Elliot to show what he can do to land this job or showcase what he can do for another program. I don't see anything wrong with it.
