Why is Mark Stoops always said to have Kentucky in the right direction?

They seem to win some games early only to falter down the back stretch of the season and miss out of Bowl Games.

12-24 in his first 3 years at Kentucky. What gives?

Basketball school. As long as they're not last and Kentucky basketball is good, the coach is going in the right direction.

There is only one direction to go at UK. Up.

I think because of recruiting, which is better than it has been (but still not any better than bottom 1/3 in the league).

The last 4 weeks of their season cooled that talk I think. He has to win 6 or 7 next year.

I think he is getting UK closer to being competitive. He has elevated the talent there but the hardest jump is going from a 4 win team to a 7-8 win team. If he stays around I can see them getting to 7-5 and maybe even an 8-4 every three years or so.

He's not going to be able to recruit at a high enough level without showing results on the field. He should probably get fired after this year, but he'll get another to get to a bowl

We were sitting at 2 wins consistently under Joker when he left. And UK has had 2, 8-win seasons since Claiborne in '84 and both came under Rich Brooks for perspective sake.

Obviously, folks were unhappy missing a bowl this season. But he has a lot of freshman and sophomore playmakers. I think the change at OC got undersold this season when it came to transitioning. The defense is a mess though and he may need staff changes on that end before it's said and done.

Next season is pretty much make or break for a bowl though. Then the seat will get incredibly hot.

Since when is once consistently? Joker went 6-7, 5-7, 2-8, which is 1 win better than Stoops,

Maybe I should've said it was progressively getting worse? You know my point.

The reality is, Brooks was highly underrated as an HC and if we're going to hire someone who is a brand new HC there's still going to be a learning curve. It is what it is. But as bad as Stoops is, he's not as bad as Joker. Joker may have ended up worse than Curry had they kept him on.

Would I love to drop him for a Richt or someone of that caliber? Sure. But unless some boosters want to pony up the $15+ million to buy him out right now this discussion is a moot point anyway. And they won't because God forbid they throw some private money at football.

But Joker also took over a program from Brooks in pretty good shape. Stoops took over and UK was in horrible shape thanks to Joker. Not really fair to compare the two.

There is a *ZERO* percent chance UK makes a bowl next year. The schedule just won't allow it.

And the way this year played out is pathetic (even by UK standards) and inexcusable imo.

Coach speak. It' being questioned a lot now, after a 2nd straight 5-7 campaign.

Mullen has been given high praise yet has only finished higher than 4th once in 7 years. 5th 4 times. Yet he always made you MSU fans hopeful. It's all relative really

I don't know, but I don't approve of them getting rid of Joker. I miss the glory years of coaches with unique nom de plumes or even just every-day usage sobriquets. We need Jokers and Wimps and Urbans and Houstons again. Butch is okay but not great. A great era is dying because coaches insist on being called "Les" and "Nick" and "Kevin" without any thought for tradition. Maybe one of our conference's coaching vacancy can lure Sonny or Dabo here.

I promised myself I wouldn't cry while thinking about those classic odd names.

Dammit.

Their schedule was so easy this year - the East was absolutely dreadful, they played the two worst teams (record wise) in the West in MSU and AU, and their toughest OOC opponent was a thoroughly mediocre Louisville squad.

This year was the year Stoops needed to establish the program. He didn't, and I don't think he ever gets it going.
