Why have TAMU's recruiting classes produced so little success?

What gives? I figured TAMU could do better than 3rd in the West. Is Sumlin the Aggie's version of Butch Jones?

Because LSU, Bama, Auburn

because they have the most overpaid and overrated coach in the country.
any questions?

they go after name recognition and star power. other successful teams go after talent and can better evaluate it.

Because a bunch of 4 and 5 star WRs and QBs don't make a good football team.

To many skill players

They play a pussy schedule (in fairness, it's worked out that way for the one interesting OOC they play every year) and then BAM! But lots of teams do that, so at this point, isn't coaching the only correct answer?
(In fairness, you have to wait to the end of the year to make your final prognostications. A loss against Bama and blowing it against OM isn't going to be so shabby if they win out and I win the lottery.)

Because recruiting classes really don't mean shite when you are going up against schools that recruit the same or better.

It's this. You can't win in the SEC filling your recruiting class with such a high % of skill players thus neglecting your defense. The pool of players that can play wide receiver is far greater than the pool of 220-265 pound athletes that can rush the passes and run sideline to sideline at the LB position.
I've always felt you can judge the strength of a team based on their recruiting class 3 years in. That 2013 class ranked 10th included 11 players who played either QB, WR, or RB. And most of that entire class isn't even on the team anymore. Not all top 10 classes are created equally.

Because that 2013 class, which by this time should be the foundation of the team, is filled with busts.
A&M signed 33 kids that year (1 5star and 14 4star). Of those 33, only a few have made any real impact on the team.
An accounting of that class was made by one of the Aggie writers this summer
Incredible how many from that celebrated class have transferred or quit football.

WR Laquvionte Gonzalez - The Under Armour All-American has logged minimal playing time and is buried in the depth chart.
QB Kohl Stewart: The four-star prospect never made it to campus as he elected to play professional baseball
DL Jay Arnold - Had surgery on both shoulders and not participating in spring football
WR Jeremy Tabuyo - Logged minimal playing time and down in the depth chart
CB Alex Sezer - Logged minimal playing time and buried down in the depth chart
S Jonathan Wiggins - Logged minimal playing time and buried down in the depth chart

OL Joas Aguilar - The Under Armour All-American retired from football
CB Tavares Garner - Logged minimal playing time and has considered transferring
CB Noel Ellis - The Under Armour All-American was forced to redshirt last season after being diagnosed with Diabetes
LB Shaan Washington - Appeared to be a potential impact player early last season but broke his collarbone against SMU last season. He’s also fighting shoulder issues.
OL Jeremiah Stuckey - Recruited as a tackle but now playing center due to the lack of depth at the position; Has not received significant playing time
TE Cameron Clear: Four-star junior college transfer had nine catches in his A&M career; could possibly make an NFL team as an OT
LB Tommy Sanders: The four-star JUCO defender started two games his first year in Aggieland and only saw minimal action after that
Incredible how many from that celebrated class have transferred or quit football.

2010 - 25
2011 - 31
2012 - 21
That's not good recruiting. We've had almost no depth while playing in the toughest division in football.
2013 - 6
2014 - 7
2015 - 10
Finally, the talent gets to campus, but it has to develop. One recruiting class doesn't get it done, and you can't expect a team made up entirely of talent F and Sophs to be very good.
Despite that, we've gone:
11-2
9-4
8-5
With three bowl wins. It's not like we've sucked. We'll probably finish the year with 9 or 10 wins this year, including the bowl game.

Because they are not physical enough on the line of scrimmage to succeed in the SEC. Their offensive linemen practice the skills necessary to run their offense which do not stress physically dominating the blocking target. Their defensive linemen and linebackers practice against their offensive linemen, so they look like they are in beast mode fighting off blockers in practices and scrimmages. Then they run into actual SEC opponents and they get whipped at the line of scrimmage.
A&M can recruit 4 and 5 star OL, DL and LB, but they won't be consistently successful in the SEC until they become more physical. Sumlin has been at A&M for 4 years now, and the problem has only gotten worse. A&M fans think they can solve the problem with schematic improvements, a la John Chavis will make them a good defensive team, but the problem starts with Sumlin and it goes deeper than schemes.

1. A&M's 2015 class was 10th, not 3rd. That gives an average class ranking of 11.3 A&M's classes are 33-13.
2. This is ironically coming from a Gator fan. Looking at Florida's 2012 - 2015 classes:
2012 #4
2013 #3
2014 #9
2015 #21
That's a recruiting class average of 9.3 with a 4-year record of 28-17 with the same number of Division and Conference titles as A&M over that span...in the weaker East no less.

AU may be a shite show every few years, but there's no denying making a NC twice between 2010-2013. That's impressive.
