Why Hasn't Bob Stoops Been Able to Keep Good to Great Defenses?

Stoops came to fame being a great DC especially at UF. And, his early OU teams especially his championship winning team had a great defense. It's been over a decade since I can say OU has had a good defense. What has happened to the defenses at OU?

They're now at Clemson.

Guess who his DC was.

Venables' defenses if my memory serves me right had started to taper off towards the end of his time at OU, right?

I see a lack of talent on the OU defense.

They were really good on defense this year. Even if they are getting dominated by Clemson right now.

Not really, but keep in mind he was co DC there from 1999-2003, and DC 2004-2011.

So more than a decade

The offense they run has some to do with it.

The way the stubbornly tried to find defensive players in the state of Texas, where they do not play defense, has the most to do with it.

He has a great D now... until they get winded...
Depth is a wonderful thing.

But didn't they play TCU and Baylor without their starting QB? Surely that would skew the numbers...

IMO, it is hard to have any great defense, when you have an offense that is designed to score fast.

There has to be balance.

Defense needs rest,it's not all about just scoring points. That is football for simpletons.

Stoops has never been good at eating clock, he uses the same approach in every big game.

Not talking bad about him, but you know what they say.. Keep doing the same things..

OU relies on Texas high school recruits big time, and Texas high school football just doesn't play defense worth a damn any more. There are so many Texas kids that you can still sign a talented defense relying primarily on Texas talent IF YOU GET WHO YOU WANT, but, OU hasn't been getting who they want out of Texas in recent years.

False.

Add to it the ones you do sign from Texas are soft and will transfer at the first sign of adversity.
