passionate or spirited, and even contentious? Some football fans will want to kick your arse if you don't agree with them or if you "disrespect" their team. A team of a bunch of kids that we don't even know, but we act like it's some family.
Why not basketball or baseball? And yes, I do know that some fan bases do prefer that, but not the majority.

Because people are so sad and deranged that their life sucks and the only good thing they have in life is some loose attachment to a place they have never been but act like it is theirs.
Basically their life sucks so they have to generate some happiness somehow.

Ever been to a Raiders home game?

Football plays only one game a week and it makes those games a lot more important.

I have a theory as to why Southern football fans seem to be more passionate than other regions of the country, but I'll save that right now.

I think it comes from the fact that colleges are the reason we have American football. The club sport began in colleges and became its own thing.

Life will really suck for Ole Miss fans then once that death penalty hits

I would say soccer fans outside the USA are crazier than football fans here.

I think a lot of that passion is the lack of pro teams in a lot of states. I am a big Saints fan, but I wish Alabama would get a pro team.

I don't think that is really the answer he was looking for. It sounds like he wants to know "why football?" Why not baseball or basketball? I have often wondered this myself and I don't know the answer. I would assume it has something to do with only 12 games a year being played, but it is amazing to me how popular football is here and it hasn't caught on as much in other countries. It's also amazing to me that soccer is so popular everywhere else and even though it's getting more popular here it is nowhere near football popular.

You only play your rivals one time.. and if you lose it's a whole year till you get a chance for revenge. Or if your lsu fans 6 years

I think it used to be baseball for a lot of people, but then the strike and the dumb PED's cases really killed it. There was too much drama.
For basketball, I think it was at its height in the 80's and 90's, but I think a lot it died as well when Jordan retired. I think one-and-done and horrible officiating has killed it for the college fans.

You can't see players faces.

Go to a European soccer match, even at the lowest club level. Better yet, just go to the parking lot at Chavez Ravine/Dodger Stadium when the Giants come to town.
College football fans are actually very civilized and respectful on the whole, imo

Just curious, what exactly do OM fans plan on doing?

I've never understood the emotional investment in school/team. I just assume that the person calling me a gump has no other way to measure success in their life.

Yes they are. As someone who lived in Germany for 3 years and went to 10+ Bundesliga (Germay's top soccer league) games, U.S College football is extremely tame compared to what the Hooligans and Ultras are doing at European matches.

I'm not talking about Europe. There aren't many European soccer fans on this board.

Organized CFB on a national level has been around for a long time, so fandoms have been passed on through multiple generations. People also feel more attached to a university if they or someone in their family attended it.
Also lots of universities are in smaller cities and towns so lots of trashy people get in on the hijinks.
