Just like every other border state, being next to Alabama hurts all the other teams because of Saban and his drawing power.

I have no affiliation with Tennessee or have any hatred, but historically when I think blue blood or historic programs, Tennessee has never come to mind

In the sec, I think Bama, Georgia, Auburn, Florida, LSU before I think of them

I'm sure that's because of how long it has been since UT has been in the national spotlight. All of those other programs have in more recent years.

Are you making the argument that Tennessee has a lot of instate talent?

Tennessee is 18th in the nation for high school recruits. That's certainly not awful, but it's also not real good. There are six SEC states rated higher.

This is not a knock on Tennessee. To me, it is a compliment, that other states have had a recruiting advantage, yet Tennessee has been able to go outside their state and get the recruits they have needed to compete at a high level. It's very impressive when you compare to other SEC states that provide their teams with a recruiting advantage and yet Tennessee has had better football than most in the past.

(These rankings are from an Athlon article from 2013, so they might have changed, but probably not a whole lot.

Just found an article from 2016 showing Tennessee at #11 in the nation. Most definitely showing improvement as David Ricky contended. (Also shows only 4 SEC states having more top recruits) (Should also note that this article basis itself on data from last 5 years)

You must be very young, then, because Alabama and Tennessee are probably historically the two with the most to brag about.

Tennessee does have the top 2019 basketball recruit.

BigBlue8Tities is right...High School talent in Tennessee is improving in both football and basketball. It isn't anywhere near a Texas, California, Florida or Georgia...but there is enough talent to develop a core for a team, supplemented by out of state talent.

UT's problem is that the top talent in the state in football is going to Clemson and Alabama and in basketball is going to Kentucky or pretty much any other D-1 program other than UT.

This year...it hurt more bordering South Carolina. The top two WR prospects both went to Clemson. Only 3 of the top 10 recruits from the '17 class in the state of Tennessee went to UT. Clemson got 2, LSU got 2, Oregon got 1, Memphis got 1 and UCF got 1. In this class, none of the top 25 went to Alabama

Recruiting rankings say Tennessee has more talent than in the past, but it hasn't translated to college or the NFL. Tennessee highschool football is still garbage. They don't take it as seriously as the deep South states.

I don't understand why this notion is still so prevalent. Tennessee has football talent, period. It's not Louisiana by any means, but there is plenty of instate talent in TN. Here are the last 5 years worth of recruiting talent by southern state (not including GA, FL, or TX) based on 246 composite.

4 and 5 stars combined
LA - 72
AL - 57
NC - 56
TN - 43
MS - 34
SC - 27
AR - 14
KY - 11

5 stars only
LA - 8
AL - 8
TN - 4
MS - 3
NC - 3
KY - 1
AR - 1
SC - 0
