Recruiting rankings say Tennessee has more talent than in the past, but it hasn't translated to college or the NFL. Tennessee highschool football is still garbage. They don't take it as seriously as the deep South states.

The population boom is not really helping. If anything it's hurting because it's pushing the demographics that tend to excel in football out.

It hasn’t translated? Tennessee’s best team in the past 10 years (2015) had Barnett, Reeves-Maybin, Hurd, Malone, Jennings, Kelly, Martin, Robertson, Kendrick, Kerbyson as starters.

All TN guys.

I think Butch’s inability to sign the elite in state players the last few years is a big reason for the talent drop off.

Non of those guys were elite except Barnett and maybe Reeves Maybin pre-injury.

A lot of very good college players and 4-5 draft picks and that is just from 2 classes.

Half the starters of a very good team were from TN. Just seems weird to act like there’s no talent with all of those being true.

I've got no beef with you. Nor with the entire state of Tennessee. That UTOV guy just disappeared.

He acts like it is common knowledge that Tennessee is bountiful with enough instate talent to field their own roster without relying on out of state talent.

I don't think that is the case. I don't think anyone can make the case that Tennessee can field a team from instate and be competitive.

Look that might be a good group of players by TNs standard, but how does it compare to LA,AL, SC etc. Those three states all have smaller populations than TN, but have much better highschool talent. If that was two classes worth of players from any of those states it would be considered a down period.

TN has comparable talent to MS, but has twice the population.

Sonny, are you aware that the state of Tennessee has nearly twice as many 5*/4* players in the next recruiting cycle as the state of Alabama?

Tennessee still has the biggest recruiting budget in the country too iirc.

Texas, aggy, Baylor, TCU, Houston, Florida, Florida state, Miami, SC, UCLA, Ohio state...

They all could, Texas and Miami actually have.

Tennessee is similar to 0U, sparse instate talent leaving the need to raid neighboring states for talent, but with less history and prestige.

Tennessee has 9 four star or better recruits in the 2018 class.

The country has 335 four star recruits or better in the 2018 class.

Is this better than 10 years ago?

I just don't think it is crazy to say that a competitive Tennessee is going to have to depend extensively on out of state.

You do know recruiting rankings are not real. Regardless of " rankings" the kids from AL will go on to sign with Bama/Auburn and compete at a high levels while the kids from TN will bust or just prove to have been overrated.

More kids from AL will be drafted from that class than TN.

LSU is starting a freshman safety and has two other freshman in the 2-deep at Safety. "5 star" Jacoby Stevens is not one of them. Rankings mean nothing once kids step on campus.

I never said that rosters are exclusive to in-state. but there are states with enough talent to do that.

Are you making the argument that Tennessee has a lot of instate talent?

If you look at the 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 instate classes, the state of Tennessee is producing more ESPN 300 and composite 4/5 star talent than any other state in the country outside of Florida, Georgia, California, and Texas.

In the Class of 2017, the state of Tennessee produced 3 composite 5-star players. And overall had the 6th most players of any state when it came to signing FBS football scholarships. Tennessee currently has a top 10 recruiting class in 2018 based largely on instate players making up the bulk of their top rated players in the class. And in the 2019 class, the state of Tennessee currently has 20 players rated as composite 4-stars by 247 sports. That's 5th most in the country after Florida, Texas, Georgia, and California. And finally in the 2020 class, 247 only has the top 109 players rated right now and the state of Tennessee has 8 players rated among the top 109 players of the 2020 class. That's more than every other state once again other than Florida, Georgia, Texas, and California.

So unless you think being the 5th best state in the country when it comes to producing elite college football talent isn't a lot of talent, Tennessee is the definition of a recruiting hotbed right now. Unless you're talking about the instate talent at Florida, Georgia, Texas, or California, Tennessee is producing most talent right now in the country.

Go and look up the 2019 class. 20 players from Tennessee in the class of 2019 currently rated as composite 4-stars by 247sports. 5th best in the country behind Florida, Georgia, Texas, and California. Then in 2020 class, 247sports only has the top 109 players rated right now. And Tennessee has 8 players in the top 109 nationally according to 247sports for the class of 2020. Once again that is good for 5th best in the country behind Florida, Georgia, Texas, and California.

What we're basically witnessing right now is the calm before the storm. Instate talent is exploding in Tennessee. Everyone who follows recruiting knows this. And it starts with the 2019 and 2020 classes. They are really the start of what will be the NEW NORMAL in Tennessee. 2017 kinda started it with 3 players being rated as composite 5-stars (Tee Higgins, Trey Smith, and Jacoby Stevens). 2018 had less highly touted guys but more depth. 2019 blows the doors off both 2017 and 2018. And 2020 right now looks like it'll be better than even 2019 which looks to be a game-changer for the state of Tennessee when it comes to instate talent.

Once again, we are right now at the calm before the storm. The state of Tennessee (in particular Metro Nashville) is about to become a huge recruiting hotbed in the next 4-5 years. Metro Nashville is gonna get talked about as one of the most fertile recruiting grounds in the country. Lotta talent coming out of there right now.
