Why do people talk about Kiffin getting a 4th chance as a HC?

He's failed as HC at 3 different stops. Failed with the Raiders, Volunteers and Trojans. Yet people talk about him as a head coaching prospect almost as much as they did about Dan Mullen and Kirby Smart. (Before those 2 became head coaches.) Is 4th time supposed to be the charm? Muschamp is unusual enough in that he's getting a 2nd chance with the Gamecoks, but this would be Lane's 4th chance.
And he's a good OC but I'm not sure he's a great one. Last year's Tide team was only 42nd in total offense. I assume this is one of the lowest total offense rankings a NC team's ever had.

He should have never been the Raiders head coach, but Davis insisted.
He would have won games at Tennessee if he stayed, but probably would have gotten us on probation too.
He had no chance at USC, none.
He's a damn good offensive coach, and I think he'll be a good HC one day.

Because Joey Freshwater was coaching those teams

He seems to be like Gene Chizik, Will Muschamp and Gus Malzahn...a better coordinator than head coach.
Lane Kiffin is still really young, though - I expect him to land another head coaching job, regardless of his past.

Well for some reason his time in Bama has changed some minds
I still think he would suck tho the power would go to his head and revert back to the same sorry sack of shite he was at tenn or sc

What about having the 42nd best offense changes minds? This isn't 2003 where averaging 28 ppg is impressive anymore.

I don't think you can count his tenure at Tennessee a "failure".
He left after one year to take his "dream job".
He had no business being offered the USC job in that situation but that's not his fault really.
I think the fact that he's submitted himself to Saban and worked at rehabbing his image and seems to be learning how to run a program from him has gone a long way towards making himself HC material again.
Who knows if he will be successful.

That sounds it up perfectly. He rose a little too quickly for his own good. And is a bit of an entitled douchebag to begin with. So he'll get another shot at coaching before long. And hopefully he'll have matured a lot since his ut wild boyz days.

I wasn't saying Alabama averaged 28 ppg. I was more saying that his offensive stats probably seem impressive by the standards of 10-15 years ago but aren't that impressive anymore.
Even if you do some adjustment for strength of scuedule and say he had more like the 25-30th best offense it's not like that's spectacular.

This is a pretty good summary of Kiffin.
Written in 2013 but still applies.

Skill players can't do anything, if you have no depth on the line. It's the same reason Herschel Walker wasn't getting 50 yards if he ran for LSU last year. When your players ate hit in the backfield, anyone would be screwed.
Lane will basically get one more chance pretty soon. And he you can't succeed after learning under Saban, then he'll ended up a career coordinator.

Kiffin could be really good if paired with the right DC.

Don't you realize that Alabama had many of their games won by half time and the only thing that the offense needed to do was to play it safe and conservative. Not often was it necessary to push offensive production, and Saban will never throw caution to the wind along with unnecessary passes.

Don't people say that about every failed HC? Heck UCLA recently had a head coach that was so bad he failed when he was paired with Norm Chow.

If I was the AD at like Purdue or something I would love to have him. If I'm a major school no way

Any coach would be an upgrade for Purdue . Darrell Hazell is the only BCS conference coach I think is clearly even worse than Muschamp.
