Why do Mississippi State fans refer to their school as "State"?

And it seems like nobody else calls them by this (except maybe Ole Miss fans).
D1 schools with state in the name (quite a few of which are higher profile programs than Mississippi State):
Arizona State
Ball State
Boise State
Colorado State
Florida State
Fresno State
Kansas State
Louisiana State
Michigan State
Oregon State
Ohio State
Penn State
San Diego State
San Jose State
Utah State
Washington State

Michigan State fans do this, as do some Pedo State fans.

Mississippi State = MSU

I can see going with the letters, but why leave off the name of the state/university?
I can't imagine being in Michigan and telling them about "State" and them thinking other than the Spartans.
To the question about why Bama? LSU, Bama, Penn State, etc are recognizable amongst others. "State" isn't.

I've heard Mich St fans refer to their school as just State. Florida fans what about FSU?

Just like everyone that plays Texas Tech in the Big 12 refers to them as Tech. I'm sure Georgia Tech goes by Tech as well. Its not a big deal.

There are 2 State a universities in the SEC
Mississippi State University
Louisiana State University
One is referred to as STATE the other as LSU
