This thread pops up every so often. It's really not complicated. LINK
But that link has no answers, just "that's baseball".
So maybe it is complicated.

So do want them hitting fungos and pitching BP
in a suit and tie?
Most of those tasks are left to coaches but occasionally
You'LL see a mgr doing of those or just getting on field
and teaching some fundamentals to particular players.

Doesn't sound complicated to me. the article states that the tradition started because managers were also players and the tradition just stuck. There's no actual reason behind why they do except for tradition. If you're looking for an actual reason, you're never going to find one

One thing was obvious, baseball purists love it and would never have it any other way

Per Skip Bertman from a radio show a few years back, - it is because they are allowed on the field of play.

Now that makes sense. Baseball action is still in play even outside the fair/foul lines. So identifying colors would be important.
Thanks!

Another question he was asked is why he wore a uniform to public events...
Sometimes, showing more enthusiasm than anyone else simply means wearing your baseball uniform all the time, which Bertman often did when appearing at events and among groups of fans to talk baseball and drum up interest in the team. “That was an attention-getter,” he says. Bertman’s style belied how his brain processed his new job. It was full-time. From day one, Bertman was more than the baseball coach. He was the marketer, fundraiser, cheerleader and, occasionally, even the box office.

One reason is, unlike other sports baseball managers are called upon to enter the field of play at times. Like when pitching changes are made or conferences on the mound with the pitcher.
Base coaches wear uniforms for obvious reasons as they are on the field of play during the game.

I rarely see it in MLB any more. The managers don't wear the jersey anyway. They wear like a short sleeve wind breaker with the team logo on it.

Yeah, the Manieri look is the best. Butch does it.
Unless you're a paragon of manliness like Cann.

Manieri needs to update that jacket he wears. I swear it is atleast 8 yrs old.

That still doesn't make any sense.

But they don't need to wear a uniform to do that. And when they make pitching changes and go out to the mound, play is stopped and they call time. It's not really different from football or basketball.

Connie Mack wore a suit when he was a manager

The link that lsufball19 shared stated that the first Managers were just business managers and had nothing to do with on-the-field issues. The uniformed guys in charge of the dugout were called Captains.
Over time the term Captain faded away
But your photo is interesting. Mack was a traditional Manager like we see today, wasn't he?

I like that it maintains a consistent and traditional look that's being lost in the other sports.

Baseball purists like Costas sound adamant about the tradition, so I doubt it ever changes
