The only reason i can think of is his color.

Many successful years at florida, the fans liked him and he actually had a head coaching year under his belt.

Why didn't Mullen get the job? Same or better qualifications as Strong, but white. Oh, I guess that would destroy your race bait.

Potential concerns in that his wife is white. Which is unfortunate in 2011.

I'm sure your question is not serious, but the serious answer is that Jeremy Foley thought Will Muschamp was the best available coach. He knows more about these things than any of us.

I never understood this argument. Clarence Thomas has a white wife and no one seems to care.

I thought the story about Mullen was that Foley or one of the higher-ups at Florida couldn't stand Mullen and absolutely hated his guts. It's not like Strong was that much more qualified than Muschamp. He's only been a head coach for a year.

Mullen didn't endear himself to former Gators and Gator fans. But after a couple of years with Addazio as OC, they grew a little fonder of him.

I would argue that Ron Zook was our best available option that year. Spurrier left very late and there was not a lot of time to find a superstar coach. I don't know who else was available at the time, but we went after some top names (Stoops and Shanahan) and got close, but no luck. Zook actually worked out very well for us. He wasn't a great coach, but he did stock us up with talent. It was his recruits that were juniors and seniors in 2006 when we won the national championship. We were probably more loaded with players when he left than when he got there. If you are going to miss on a coaching hire, you had better miss with someone who can recruit extremely well. Anything else will devastate your program.

Foley wanted a fresh start. Strong would not have provided that.

Really though, Strong was nothing special. The only thing he proved was that he could take 5 star talent and usually turn it into solid defense. About what you would expect. Nothing more, nothing special.

Because Muschamp was one of the top candidates the first time Meyer stepped down last December? Plus, Strong took a couple of UF's assistants with him to Louisville that made lateral moves and ditched UF leaving us with a huge staff turnover.
