Why did Tennessee's fan base buy the Butch hype

It was probably less impressive than Alabama hiring Dubose or Shula. How could a fan base get excited about one of the most unexcitable and forgettable hires in SEC history, definitely Big 6 history.

Well neither are you or I. If that is true then I propose to have their Big 6 membership vacated/annulled/ended/suspended/buried with Hoffa.

His track record was good. But looking back, it seems like maybe Brian Kelly was the main reason Butch was successful. He would turn around the programs and build up the talent base. Jones would take over and run the same system, negating a lot of the drop off from the coaching change, and then bolt after a few years.
At UT Butch had to come in and do everything by himself, and out recruiting people doesn't work in the SEC like it does at his other stops.

A lot of people knew Butch had been riding Brian Kelly's coattails most of his career. And he brought his entire Cincinnati coaching staff with him and thought they'd be successful in the SEC. He needed to at least make a big offensive or defensive coordinator hire.

Jones is obviously one hell of a salesman. Plus he had wob his conference 4 times before coming to Tennessee
