In front of 13k people in Foxborough?
Playing a patsy in an empty NFL stadium halfway across the country seems like it'd be thoroughly demoralizing.
What was the financial play?

Sounds like an awesome road trip to me, especially this time of the year. MSU with the awesome football road trip to go along with their baseball trip to Los Angeles this past season.

I think it would have bee an awesome road trip as well
But their fanbase wouldn't exactly be the type to make the trip, if you know what I mean.

I had the pleasure of visiting Boston this summer. Beautiful town, definitely worth seeing. Just seems like playing @ Boston College would be a much better fit in that scenario.

it was a 2 for deal
it got them 2 home games for a lot less money than SEC teams traditionally pay fro "rent a wins"
although the SEC teams all get great money from the league disbursement; State is still at a competitive disadvantage to other teams in the league because they aren't anywhere close in terms of merchandising royalties
let me know if you need anything else...

That makes sense.

Mullen is from up there, he was trying to spread his name around that area with an expected Bulldog blowout (which backfired) so some other school like Maryland would make him an offer.

Because Notre Dame never even responded to their voicemails

Kinda like Florida not responding to Ross Bjork for an interview.

I went to the game. It was fun, but it was odd to be at a game with so few people. I stayed in Newport, RI and drove up for the game. The UMass fans that I talked with were thrilled to have us visit. They have some legit talent, but not enough depth.
If you have to schedule a last minute game, that was a good one. Way better than going to Troy, USA, etc.

Maryland offered last year.

UMass was a last minute addition due to a cancellation. I thought this has been discussed.

Boston College may be looking for a new coach here pretty soon.
