Its rare you see 3rd string true freshman QBs...not redshirted.

Probably a pre-signing promise. I don't mind him getting some in-game experience if it means he will have 2 good seasons before he leaves.

I think Sumlin promised him early PT if he stuck with his committment. Dude was Texas Offensive POY, and i would imagine a lot of players of that caliber don't redshirt. Might as well get Kenny some snaps so he's not without any experience next season. I wish he could've played more, but that may still happen depending on Johnny's health. Also, A&M has a 5-star QB enrolling in spring, likely followed by Kyle Murray in 2015, so A&M will be loaded. Hill likely won't be 3-year starter anyway depending on if he loses the starting nod to Allen and transfers or does really well and leaves early.

He looked like he may have won the backup job up until the SMU game where he looked terrible in 2 garbage time series. So I think you had a few factors in play.

1. It wasn't a done deal that Joekel had won the backup job. In fact I don't know that if Johnny can't play that it is solidly Joekel's either considering he didn't look good against Aubie.

2. With Johnny's style of play you need 3 QB's and so you don't want to pull a shirt on a kid in Game 8. If there is a chance he could be needed go ahead and play him.

3. A&M has sick talent coming in at QB so worrying about losing a RS year is wasted effort. Either he wins the job or he leaves anyway. Or you look at JFF who is almost certain to leave as a RS Sophomore as it is.

4. Texas has been a hotbed of QB talent ever since the HS's started playing the Spread. Andrew Luck, RGIII, Tannehill, Chase Daniel, JFF, it goes on and on. You can argue that Texas isn't producing defensive players like it used to but QB's is another story. That doesn't even account for Kyle Allen who is from AZ.

5. It bodes well for recruiting to let players who earn snaps burn their shirt if they earn it.

All solid points.

If JFF cant play vs. Vandy I'd like to see him get some snaps.

The second-string battle wasn't resolved when the season started.

This.

With that being said, I would like to see him play against Vandy and UTEP if Johnny needs to heal.
