Mr. Newton earned 51k for playing in and losing the Super Bowl. Not to shabby for 1 game on the losing end. But he owes the state of California 101,360 in state taxes off of that meaning his tax rate is 198%. I would be pissed too

it's funny though,, players in the NBA/MLB/NFL that support all these leftist politicians, celebrate when they get signed by a left coast or yankee north east team then realize they are going to pay twice the taxes that guys who signed w/ KC or Houston or Jax are going to pay...
hahahaha
see, I think it's funny too!

Yes, you can. Welcome to California.
The 51K was merely his bonus for playing the Super Bowl.
California's state income tax is based on his total salary for the year, 1/23 of his total income, based on the percentage of games on his schedule that he played in the state.
If I'm not mistaken, all states with a state income tax levy that tax on out of state pro athletes that come to their state to play. California will tax Newton, and every player who played yesterday, on every penny they earned yesterday.
On the plus side for Newton, he played 15 of his 23 games in states that have no state income tax.
edit: OP was using Auburn math to arrive at his percentage, which of course, isn't accurate.

lol no you can't
he is going to have 2 more games there this year, and that is how they came up with this number.
Also even though it is a "game check" I am guessing contract is paid over time. Unsure

Cali has a special pro athlete rule, but anybody that travels for work alot actually can get taxed in other states.
Whether the company you work for does it right and withholds is entirely different.

Hmm, leaves him with 78,640 cash money from Auburn. Not too shabby.
