Wanted to get some clarification on which fanbase actually started the chant

From the 1992 expansion thread:
quote:

people don't realize that the SEC chant started out as a taunt against arkansas by our southwest conference foes as we struggled with jack crowe in our last two seasons in the SWC.

Barnhill South had a deafening S-E-C chant going as the SWC crowned their champion our final year.

quote:

That isn't accurate.

UGA fans chanted it at the 1991 Independence Bowl. I was there.

So who were the originators?

Sounds like our SWC opponents were the originators.

The S-E-C chant goes back to at least 1987, because I remember Ole Miss fans chanting during a NIT game at Southern Miss. This was before the game. USM won like 91-70 and won the NIT that year also.

Doesn't matter where it "started"

It didn't pick up as a 'thing' to do until recently. I think it happened around '06 or so when the title streak started with UF bashing OSU after every talking head said it should have been an OSU-Michigan rematch and that the Buckeyes were going to crush UF.

I think LSU destroyed ND that year in the Sugar Bowl. Did they chant it there too?

No, like I said I remember teams chanting it back in the 80's.

Ok? Just because you remember chanting it way back when doesn't mean it was a conference-wide thing that everyone does vs OOC opponents. That only started very recently.

The SEC chant is over two decades old, but LSU is the program to use it the loudest. Nowadays they wished they didn't do it. lol.

No, as I said against big time opponents it was done in the 80's.(Bowl games, vs Miami, FSU, Penn St and the likes).

Our last year in the SWC our fans used it a lot to rub the Texan jackasses noses in the fact that we wouldn't be around to be screwed by them anymore.

Our last game against texas,in little rock and a win,was especially sweet.....SEC!

I first remember hearing it during the 07 Sugar Bowl when LSU took ND to the woodshed.

there is footage of UGA's 1980 national title team chanting it in their locker room after a big win so it pretty obvious that is started well before Arky was leaving the SWC.

This is not at all what the OP is talking about.

Listen, I'm an old bastard and this has been going on by fans, players, etc. since the 80's, maybe even the late 70's. It never has entered my mind that Arkansas or the SWC started it. It was around way before Arky was sweat on the SEC's balls.

Yep...been around for a long time. As I stated earlier, LSU is the program that did it the loudest and now they wished they didn't do it since they can't even beat Bama anymore and other SEC teams have made it harder for them to win now.

Over the last two years the chant has started to fade back.

It is pretty dumb to do the whole chant anyways when your team gets its skull crushed like Ole Miss did against TCU and celebrate a Bama conference title by doing the chant (non Bama fans).
