A local LSU beat writer brought this up in a column about the merits of Coach O as a HC in the SEC. His question was, if Saban is #1, who would Coach O have to beat to become #2 at this point in time? Point being, his opinion, Coach O has a good a chance as any current HC at being #2.

Mcelwain has done a pretty damn good job considering he has coached a year and a half without a quarterback. Dan Mullen lead Mississippi State to a number one ranking. Bert is a good coach but he's in a tough place to win. The guy at Vandy is undoubtedly a good coach. Oregeron would have to be towards the bottom of the list based on what we know

Shocking from an LSU writer.. Truly shocking

To answer who he has to beat to earn that title, Saban

I honestly think it's Bert.

If Arky could draw any talent - especially on defense - he'd look much better.

I would have to say Gus Malzahn based on results but McElwain in terms of doing more with less. Florida has a solid defense but McElwain inherited a pretty bare cupboard on offense.

The man has not even coached a full year yet. We don't even know who the OC will be. Way way too early for this type of thread. But I do know ill take him over Butch

Shows how much stock you should place in a coach's first few games.

Coaches that field competitive teams without the 5* fire power of their peers and subsequently lose more than they win, get branded bad coaches more times than not.

I don't think "O" is an exceptional coach anymore than say Mark Stoops. I just think their players feed off their energy and desire to win, and they actually care about players and winning. They surround themselves with above average OC's/DC's and then people call them good coaches.

The exception in the SEC is Saban. He is involved with the Defense and everyone executes their plan based on his vision/philosophy. He truly is a "great" coach even though he has arguably the best talent to put his plans into motion.

I thought Franklin was a great coach at Vandy before he moved on. Then there are some good coaching minds in the SEC, that just don't have the right OC/DC in place to make them look good and win.

Does it matter?

Bama is so far out in front of everyone at the moment it's kind of a silly question...but to answer it. No, it's not Orgeron and won't be until (if) he actually does something.

UF Coach or Miss State Coach get my vote. Mullen has done wonders for State.

I know a lot of folks will look at the Ole Miss record. But that was a long time ago and I will give him the benefit of the doubt.

Hard to tell. It is hard to judge Gus, Bert, Merlins, and Freeze because they have to grind against Saban. Would any of those dominant the East? Don't know.
