Solid write up. I agree.

I think if LSU wins another title, which would put us at 5 (and we continue not to suck), we would be even more of a contender or on that list.

Football just started in 2000? You obviously don't know what a blue blood is. We think the last 20 years is recent history.

There is a pretty clear dropoff after the Top 9.

Notre Dame
Michigan
Ohio State
Nebraska
Texas
USC
Alabama
Oklahoma
Penn State

Those are the true blue bloods. Blue Bloods are there due to decades and decades of continued success, as opposed to some of the next tier of "good programs" that have significant periods of downturn. Penn State is the only one in danger of dropping off...and they still have 35 more wins and .005 win percentage on the next closest blue blood candidate in Tennessee.

Programs like Miami and Navy have historic periods, but don't have sustained success like the true blue bloods.

The truth is, and I know this won't be popular, that the SEC has some good programs, but Alabama is the only blue blood. Tennessee could get there with a solid decade or so. But really, it would take 20+ for anyone else to get close. Georgia and LSU could do it, but it would take a long run to really get there.

Auburn fans, you are on the wrong side of the grand canyon. Almost 30 wins and 20 points in win percentage to catch LSU...that is massive.

No one else is close enough to mention.

Good on anyone who can admit they might be wrong.

The '40s and '50s, especially the late '50's were not so good for the Vols.

I ran the numbers for UT/Bammer since 1930. Even with Bammer's vacated games they have overborne the Vols.

The '40's and '50s not good for the Vols, the '60s and '70s very good for Bammer.

Even with vacated games

Bama Tenn
1930's 79 83

1940's 66 67

1950's 50 72

1960's 90 67

1970's 103 75

1980's 85 78

1990's 83 98

2000-09 58 83

2010-15 72 38
686 661

It formats crappy but I guess it is readable.

That isn't correct. Alabama won 92 games in the 90s. Gene Stallings won 70 in his 7 years, the last year being 1996.

Alabama won 78 games from 2000-2009, the programs worst stretch in my lifetime.

UF had a season as recently as 1979 where it won no games at all.

UF went 53 years with no conference crowns and when it did win one, it was vacated.

Why would you rant against the Vols on the subject of Blue Bloods?

Since you go back to the 70s talking about UF, I'd note that the Gators rank 12th in the nation since 1970, and UT ranks 17th.

UF has won 9 SEC titles since 1970, UT 5, including 1989, which was shared with Alabama and Auburn.

Nebraska has plenty to sell.

Like what?Great looking women?Mild winters?

Nebraska and Penn State's best days are behind them.
Pennsylvania's NOT CLOSE to the state that it once was in producing HS talent and Nebraska's "walk on" program has been hurt by the growth the start ups of new DI programs throughout the country and the fact they're no longer light years ahead of other programs when it come to S&C and "sports science" ie juicing your nuts off.

All time wins are never a factor because programs like Michigan started a lot earlier than others.

Michigan lost their blue blood status years ago. Even with a share of the 1997 national title, that didn't help their cause to stay as one of the elites.

Minnesota hasn't won a national title since 1960 and 55 years later, they still have more poll titles than Michigan.

Nebraska hasn't won a conference title since 1999 and hasn't played for a a title since 2001. Their blue blood status ended after the 2009 Big XII title loss to Texas. I believe you get a cushion of less than 10 years a long as you are winning for the most part, and NU did do that, but nothing more became of it.

The powerful Nebraska name will forever resonate because of the best team ever in 1995; three undefeated national titles in a five year stretch, and national championship caliber in 8 of 9 seasons from 1993-2001.

USC is still less than 10 years removed from a dominant stretch which added to their overall blue blood legacy. They may lower in tier status but not much. Their blue blood status is well intact.

Same with Notre Dame compared to USC. ND playing for 2012 NC elevated their rightful position and they are safe.

True Blue Bloods right now:

Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, USC

i agree with this list ... have never considered texas or mich a blueblood ... not to demean them, but texas' history, far as national titles are concerned, began in the 60s ... some success before then, but much of their reputation is built on a short run in the late 60s and their size/money status ... everyone knows the arguments against mich ... and neither has done much, as this post states, since then ...

Huskers

In football there are 8 blue bloods and this is the ranking as of 2019. Huskers are holding off PSU and Tennessee... I’m looking for the link to the site but as of now. There is your list.

Blue bloods as of 2019

Here it is. As of now PSU and Tennessee are a little ways away from catching the Huskers who come in at last. Actually there is quit a bit of difference since the Huskers dominated from the 60s to 2000s. That’s 40 plus years and there real struggle came just the past 4-5 season. They had 14 9-11 win season out of the last 20 years. So they have kept it respectable until Mike Riley got hired.
