Which program would lose more by finishing strong and keeping their coach?

LSU - fans would be clamoring for Orgeron.
auburn - The Gus Bus would be on the road again.

I would be more worried if I were auburn. They are looking like a solid team now and getting stronger each week. Even though Gus is clearly not a good coach, and keeping him would probably mean never winning the SEC with him as HC, it would not be a disaster. They could field some solid teams.

LSU, on the other hand, would be the worst comic tragedy if Yaw Yaw won out, or close to it, and got the HC job. Nobody in his right mind believes Orgeron is a decent head coach. If he puts a little run together and gets the job, LSU would have fired a guy who won a national championship, two SEC championships, and three SEC West Division first place finishes...and replaced him with Ed Orgeron. If I didn't like LSU, I would be wanting this to happen just to laugh at it all.

God I hope LSU is dumb enough to retain Orgeron

Auburn won the SEC in 2013 with Gus as head coach. He is the best coach in the west (over 5 feet tall).

Bama would trade a loss to LSU for y'all to keep Ogre. The sad thing is, y'all would make the same trade.

Coach O is a walking disaster in the long-term. But, LSU AD has drawn another line in the sand by saying he has no chance to be the coach.

I mean, we both know that is fantasy. Maybe a win over Arky would suffice. I know y'all would be ecstatic.

Yeah, that much is clear

Gus has shown growth this year as HC. People forget he's relatively inexperienced as a college HC, and at the college level in general. He's barely been at the college level as long as Saban has been at Bama. Growth and the ability to see your flaws and willingness to change them is something that separates the good and longstanding coaches like Saban from the pretenders like Les Miles.

This is something I said before the season that I wanted to see out of Gus before I wrote him off. I'm willing to see where it goes.

So for O to even get consideration he would have to win out in my eyes.

So if he beats OM, Bama, Ark, UF, and aTm are you calling all of that luck? If not I'm not sure why he would be terrible......we certainly won't have any worse players down the road. Can we also agree that Les Mile definitely wouldn't have won these 5 games? I'm not saying that O will win all 5 but he has a better chance than Miles had.... .01% > 0%

I understand the doubt about O as a head coach. That said, I can't imagine it being the utter disaster that folks are imagining. For a program to utterly unravel, you need to bring in a coach with a new system that is going to change the culture that just doesn't end up working as you give him a couple years of shite to get things up and running. O isn't that guy. The only thing we would be really worried about long term would maybe be recruiting violations, which would be the worst case scenario and he isn't that much more likely for that to happen than most folks you hire. The most likely scenario if he is hired is O comes back to earth the next year and is just middling for a season or two. It isn't good but not exactly a complete and utter disaster given the last few years of middling.

You'd think Bama fans would be the last to talk about Malzahn, as he has lit up your defense year after year.

Gus Malzahn is an amazing coach and Auburn was extremely smart to give him an extension.

Auburn should do everything in their power to make sure Malzahn is their coach for a decade or more.

1000 upvotes, if I was Auburn I would award him with a lifetime no cut contract.

It should also be noted that during the 3+ seasons that Gustav has been HC at AU, the following programs have been led by either the winningest or 2nd winningest HCs (in terms of overall win %age) in their respective school's post WWII history:

Alabama - #1
UGa - #1
LSU -#1
Ole Miss -#2
MSU - #2
Missouri - #2
S Carolina - #1
TAMU - #2

In 24 games against the above schools, AU is exactly .500 (12-12). Not great, but not bad for someone who is in their 5th season as a college HC, going up against some of the most successful HCs in at their respective programs in the last 70 years.
