Which current SEC Head Coach is the best at developing Quarterbacks? by Henry Jones Jr
quote:
~Alex Smith (Heisman Finialist, 1st Overall Draft Pick)
~Chris Leak (BCS Natinonal Champion, All-SEC, Florida's franchise passing leader)
~Tim Tebow (Heisman Trophy Winner, BCS National Champion)
~Cam Newton * (Heisman Trophy Winner, BCS National Champion)
Urban Meyer and Gene Chizik/Malzahn
Not Mullen.
Oh and Dak wasn't a Heisman candidate.
Freeze's first 2 quarterbacks have thrown for at least 2,994 yards in each season. One including 4,000+
Except when you talk to Smith, Tebow, and Leak, they all say Mullen is who developed them.

Brian Johnson was left off the list, btw.

I would have to say Barry Odom - none of his QB's have ever lost a game under his tenure as HC....

Bert had absolutely shite to do with developing Wilson and his second best QB lost to Toledo.

What Mullen did with Chris Relf when he came to MSU before Relf graduated was a miracle considering the team talent etc. Mullen hands down.

If that were a true motivator, every TAMU QB would be a Heisman Winner, and the 12th Men would have sore jaws.

He is not a head coach but look what Kiffin did to two scrubs the last two years. Two championships in a row. Bama fans will give me hell for saying that but it's true. Blake is my favorite player of all time and Jake was tough as nails but neither was exactly a great quarterback by any stretch.
I don't know if we'll have Lane after this year but he is a quarterback whisperer. If he works a similar miracle with Bateman then you can go ahead and prepare your anus.

Can't win championships without decent QB play and Saban has plenty of them. It's Saban.

If we're just talking college, Saban has taken relatively unknown QBs and won championships. That's pretty impressive.
Mullin has tenure, so he's bound to have a few come through. He's had some great ones too.
Bert has only had BA at Arkansas, so this year will be interesting if he is able to develop AA into a great QB (other teams excluded because we're only looking at SEC).
I don't know if Freeze is good, or really lucky.
For LSU, instead of posting analysis which reads like a troll, I'm just going to say I don't know enough about their QBs and leave it at that.
I think the few which respond to Summlin are good/great, but the rest burn out. That's not really good coaching IMO.
Gus can call the plays when he has a QB with a particular skill set, which in turn makes him look good. That's not really coaching, that's recruiting for a specific skill set (nothing wrong with that). To a certain degree, an argument may be made that all coaches do that.
For the West
tl;dr - I go with Bama at the SEC collegiate level

You guys are probably right. Nick Saban hired a young, inexperienced Major Applewhite to coach quarterbacks in 2007. That was a short notice hire and when he run him off he went on to hire some really good ones. Had a big name quarterback coach at LSU too. He knows how to hire coaches.

Urban Meyer
No. Urban was a WR coach became a head coach. Not a QB coach or ever even an OC. He's by no means a developer of QB's.
He's a hell of a CEO and knows how to hire great employees. That's why his coaching tree is so impressive.
