You can only be part of the Saban coaching tree if you supplement "aights" into your vocabulary. Verdict is still pending on Kiffin

Maybe he doesn't want to be a HC again. Some guys are just not cut to be a HC. I mean he is the OC under Saban so I am guessing he is part of the Saban coaching tree, it only makes sense

I would say no. He coaches offense. He wouldn't go to Saban for technique advice on offense would he?

Absolutely. His coaching career was dead in the water. Saban gave him a chance to show what he could do.
Whether or not he can be successful at a school where the offense was expected to win without a great defense to shut down the opponent is another question, however.

I don't know their relationship. Did Saban give Jim his start? That is what I think of when someone says coaching tree or mentor. To me Kiffin would think of Pete Carroll wouldn't he? He cut his teeth out there with Carroll and Norm Chow not with Nick Saban. He's taken what Norm taught him and brought it to Alabama not the other way around. He isn't using what Saban taught him.

This is really irrelevant. We're using the word "tree", right? So the question is, what does the fruit look like? If he leaves Alabama to have what analysts would say is a successful tenure as a head coach...that would be different fruit from what we saw at UT or USC. Saban would be the difference.

If he is successful as a HC, yes to some.
If he is a failure as a HC, yes to the others.

Why? The person who hired me out of college gave me an opportunity, but there are several others I would place far ahead of that person in terms of helping me be a success.
A mentor could be someone who entered your life at a later stage in your career and showed you a great way to do things that would further your career.
McElwain is not likely the HC at Florida today if he were never the OC for Bama and Saban. Same could possibly be said about Kirby and UGA. And, when the time comes, when Lane goes elsewhere, you could make an argument that he doesn't get that opportunity if not for Saban giving him the chance (and guidance, instruction, etc) at Bama. That's a mentor, not "whoever gave you your start".

It's not irrelevant and is pretty subjective. Where they get their start from is important that is what defines them. Saban has give Lane a second chance so to speak and I'm sure he respects the hell out of him. But you'd have to ask him where he considers his roots to be.
