When Bama wasn't considered a top program of all time

I remember about 12 years ago listening to the Dan Patrick show on ESPN when he discussed a list of what was considered the top 5 programs of all time. I was shocked at the time that Alabama wasn't included. I don't remember all 5 programs, but think that the list included Texas, Notre Dame, USC, Oklahoma and Nebraska. Michigan and Alabama were not included. Dan discussed Alabama and stated that basically they weren't considered a top 5 program because they had become irrelevant and had never had a Heisman Trophy winner. It's funny how things change.
I know this is an off season topic, but what do you think the top 5 programs of all time would look like today?
Considering the number of championships and Heisman Trophy winners, my guess in order -
1. Alabama
2. USC
3. Notre Dame
4. Oklahoma
5. Ohio State

Alabama and Michigan were top 3 then too, but Dan was being dishonest.

Not to shocking during Bama's darkest days.
I bet Tennessee and a few other programs in the SEC wish those dark days would return. Many SEC programs benefited from Bama competing with one arm tied behind their backs, but now they've got to earn those recruits. Times sure have changed, but in reality, things have gotten back to the norm.

I don't think I could pick just 5 teams. However, the schools below would definitely be on my list somewhere.
Oklahoma
Alabama
Notre Dame
Texas would probably be next, but they sucked for so long that I'm hesitant to include them. I somewhat struggle putting Notre Dame on here, because I don't care what happened before 1950, and while I think Notre Dame belongs, they've always received more respect then they deserved.
I probably would have included Alabama 12 years ago, but can't say for certain. The current era of success cements Alabama's place on the list, though.
I don't know how you can't include Oklahoma on the list, because they've pretty much dominated in every decade since WWII, with the exception of the 60's and 90's somewhat.

Does't Michigan have more wins than any program ever?
I know their lack of national titles in the modern era leaves a lot to be desired.

Ohio State isn't a top 5 program. I would replace them with Michigan. Other than that I agree with your list.

Ohio State has 6 major poll national titles. Michigan has 2.
Michigan has 42 Big Ten titles. Ohio State has 35.
Michigan has more wins all-time, I believe. And Michigan leads the all-time series against Ohio State.
Basically, just depends on how much you value national championships. So, as an Alabama fan, I would imagine you value them a lot.

Notre Dame
Alabama
Michigan
Ohio State
Oklahoma
Southern Cal's all-time winning percentage isn't anywhere near the other 5 listed above.
I think the top 5 is pretty cut and dry.

decent list ... texas def is not top 5 all time ... they had a nice run in the late 60s and 1 decent run under mack, but they didn't do much before the 60s and have too little to show since then ...

Did you really just put Notre Dame ahead of Bama?
Less nattys and irrelevant since the 80s = better?

That was in no particular order.
But, for the record, Notre Dame has the highest winning percentage of all-time, and the second-most major poll national championships.

Apologies, i thought you were placing them in order. But yes, solid list

I bet there are people out there who wouldn't put Tennessee among the top 10 all-time CFB programs due to how bad they've been over the last ten years. A lot of football fans are retarded and have the memory of a goldfish.

Tennessee is probably top 10, but they are fringe top 10.
Notre Dame
Alabama
Oklahoma
Michigan
Ohio State
Southern Cal
Nebraska
Texas
Those 8 teams are all higher. Then Tennessee, Florida State, and Penn State are probably 9-11 in whatever order.
Tennessee only has 2 major poll national titles. They have the exact same all-time winning percentage as Florida State.

I think the top 5 is pretty cut and dry.
11 national titles (#3)
7 Heisman winners (#1)
33 bowl wins (#2)
38 conference titles (#4)
USC is most certainly top 5.
7 of their claimed national titles are AP/Coaches, that's good for #3 all-time.

National championships are of course the most important thing. The reason Michigan has so few major poll titles is because they won basically all of theirs before the major polls existed. I just have to put them in the top five because they have the most wins of any program.
I'm not sure how you justify having Notre Dame above Bama when Bama has twice as many bowl victories, more national titles, more All-Americans, and basically equivalent all-time wins. Unless you're putting a huge stock in Heisman winners.

People give us shite for claiming titles but 6 of Michigan's were retroactive.
