I keep seeing it mentioned. Is it like a big joke among the bowl games?

I know it has struggled with sponsorship in the past. Is it one of too many bowl games?

It's obviously not a big bowl, but I wouldn't consider it a "joke" compared to all of the other BS bowls that have sprouted up over the last decade.

The stadium? It is aging. I played in it when I was in high school, now both of my kids have played in it as well.

The stadium is so-so. No cell phone service in '12 - that may have improved, but I doubt it. The parking is way, way worse than the stadium, particularly if there has been any recent rain. Get there a few hours early or prepare to slog through a mile+ of mud. Getting out of the place is a big time-waster. The surrounding neighborhood is also a bit dicey.

But I wouldn't call it a "joke", relative to the other billionty bowls.

inb4 people starting claiming that the Independence Bowl was a much better bowl that always featured solid ranked teams back in the day.

Ole Miss has played in it more times than anyone else, so I don't expect to see such claims.

What's the deal with the Independence Bowl? It's not independent...and it's not in a bowl...it's in Shreveport! And that's really the worst part.

(How's that?)

Worst bowl or road game I've been too. Ghetto area. High school stadium. No room to tailgate.

Only redeeming point are the nasty casinos.

Bowl started in 1976 which was the Bicentennial thus the name Independence Bowl.

I can name several bowls I'd like to see go before the Independence.

Ole Miss (4–1) leads the way with five all-time appearances in Bowl history. Louisiana Tech is second with four appearances (2–1–1).

Hilarious! Effing hilarious!

Ole Miss hasn't played there since 2002. Fifteen years ago. You know, when Eli Manning was a junior.

LSU fan wants to talk bowls? At least we score when we play in Sugar Bowls.

Back in the 90s it was a legit game in a shitty city. Usually featured two teams ranked 18-25 or so.

In 1997, they had LSU vs Notre Dame.
in 2006, they had Bama vs Okie State as those teams were on the way up.

They had problems with sponsorships. They had Poulan as a sponsor and got the monicker as the Weedeater Bowl, but in a cruel irony, losing that sponsorship hurt the bowl tremendously.

In 1998, the NCAA started approving all of these new bowl games. Bad leadership, an aging stadium and better cities kept pushing it down the ladder.

They finally have a double Power 5 tie in again. They'll be a destination for 6-6 SEC and ACC teams for the next few years. That's better than MAC vs Conference USA which they had four years ago.
