Depends on who they get to replace Saban. Good head coaches aren't easy to find, so they'd likely struggle a few years, just as they did after Bryant and Stallings.

Without an all-time coach like Saban or Bear, they're Shula/ Franchionne era level. Inconsisten, a couple good 10 win years, a couple bad 6 loss years, surrounded by a bunch of average years

What does that tell you?

That you've hired some really mediocre HCs over the years. And that next time you have a vacancy, you're much more likely to hire another mediocrity than to hire another Saban, Bryant or even Stallings.

Other than a Kirby Smart promotion, I don't see Bama fricking around (not that Smart would be fricking around) with hires. We'll offer more $ to the best and make them say no to all that money. I'd honestly be disappointed if we didn't want to break the bank for the next coach.

This. I think Bama(boosters, admins) has always known what it takes to win. After wondering in the dark for such a long time, they have learned from the past mistakes and are less likely to repeat them.

I think they thought they knew what it took to win. But realized, strictly hiring legacies severely limited us on getting the best candidate. And I think we've learned from that mistake.

Well...let's see.

When Mike DuBose was hired in 1996/1997, he was hired by an athletic director who pissed Stallings off so much that he resigned. Also at that time we had a university president who was looking to de-emphasize athletics. The DuBose hire was a bad one made by an incompetent AD who bowed to pressure from the fan base rather than doing a proper coaching search.

Dennis Franchione was actually a good hire. He turned a 3-8 Alabama team into a 7-5 one the following year, before producing Alabama's second best team of the 00s in 2002. That team was tough, physical, and would have finished the season 11-2 and in the Top 5 if not for Fran deliberately blowing the Iron Bowl. The way that team was playing by the end of the year, it could have beaten Georgia in a rematch in the SEC Championship Game had it been eligible.

Mike Shula was a desperation hire after the Mike Price scandal. Price would have been a good fit for Croyle and the offensive personnel at Alabama. But unfortunately he paid for a stripper using a university credit card. He was fired in the month of May, a time when no one of substance would have taken on that job. Shula showed some real balls taking on that job. He just lacked the experience and the skills required to grow and learn in the position.

Not sure, but Sparty could have risen to the top(even though they sort of already have).

The baby boomers only knew Alabama as one of the top programs nationally. Now the current generation has become the same way. So as long as after Saban leaves we don't spend another thirty years with the good ol boy bj system again, the reputation will stay the same. Hopefully, young Bama fans won't have to spend most of their life with the shite talking that I did, while growing up in Florida.
This. I think Bama(boosters, admins) has always known what it takes to win. After wondering in the dark for such a long time, they have learned from the past mistakes and are less likely to repeat them. They have deep pockets and will go after who they feel will continue what Saban has established. They will get a true alpha male like Saban and will give him total control and let the train keep rolling. Won't win em all, but will win enough to keep fans happy

No doubt. That's why you won't see an assistant take over at Bama because they know it's easier to end up with a Mushchamp or Dooley than a Fisher.

Hahahaha. We've had 4 great coaches, and some other pretty good ones. Outside of Whitworth and Dubose-Shula, We've had pretty good coaches going back to the 1910s.

What does that tell you?

Mike Archer and Gerry Dinardo each had 10-win seasons at LSU and Archer won an SEC title.
