Kick? That is inexcusable for a coach on his level to make such a costly mistake. Watch this video of the broncos 64 yard field goal from a few weeks ago. It shows perfect coverage. Once the ball is kicked the entire line spreads out ready to make the tackle. That loss falls on Saban. Bama fans deserve better. That one mistake pissed away their chance for a 3 peat

Maintain your lines. Wasn't the cat that missed the field goals and got replaced for that attempt also a LB in high school, or is that just rumor?

The kicker should have made the field goal. It's not like it was that long. It was only like 55 yards.

Uncharacteristic oversight for sure; it happens even to the best. While not having his FG kicking team ready is obviously ridiculous (most were standing around watching the kick) I doubt if many teams actually practice those circumstances.
Coach Richt in an interview last week reported that our special teams had never practiced it but did so one time after seeing what happened in the Iron Bowl. However, our kicking team knew what was being practiced, the FG kicker apparently just kicked the ball in the endzone and our return specialist ran the kick back for a TD.
Richt had the guys just playing 2-hand-touch on the play an no one got 2 hands on the runner. Richt was specifically asked if he would put more athletes/skill players on the FG kicking team as an adjustment. His comment was: then we might miss the kick and he shrugged. Basically he concluded that it's a trade-off between insuring the kick is protected vs coverage. He said that key is to make sure that the attempt is well within the range of your kicker.
The Auburn run-back was a wake up call for all teams attempting long FG's. There might well be fewer attempts within marginal range except when the game is on the line like the situation in the Iron Bowl. But considering the now known high risk of the kicking team not being able to cover a return, many teams might just choose to let the game go in to overtime. In retrospect, no doubt Saban wishes he had done just that.

That's what SEC head coaches get paid millions of dollars for - to understand the risk/reward of game decisions - especially with championship implications.

Are you saying Saban hasn't earned his money at Bama? The man made a coaching mistake. It wasn't his first and it won't be his last. He is still the best in the business. Do we really won't to go down the road of bad coaching involving games that have "championship implications"? Hell at least Bama had a chance and should of won this game. I remember a coach who seemed to waste a whole month of preparation getting his team ready for the game to make his team one of if not the best team of all time. Now that was horrendous coaching in a clutch situation and it wasn't just for a few plays. It was for an entire game.

Of course Lil Nicky isn't going to take any blame. Olberman said his press conference was the lowest class thing he's seen in college football in decades and he deserved to be fired. Instead he gets a raise. What a gig.
