Just a couple of years ago, Arkansas turned it down. Stan Heath was coach.

very few as of late. With the NCAA having "purchased" the NIT and the NIT having seeding and brackets ahead of time instead of just throwing togethor teams close by who can draw the most people, more teams have decided to accept the bids.

I dont think so recently, they were on a streak of 10 NCAA tourney's I believe. Then the past 2 seasons were spent in the NIT.

I remember one year when Swat Mitchell was on the LSU team (1982?) a few players from LSU said to reporters that they didn't really want to play in the NIT after a dissapointing year. They played at home and lost to Tulane. What a bummer. True story but not sure exactly what year.

Yes, he stated that the team didn't deserve it. I didn't disagree.

May have just been a few. That game was a hard sell-out at the Assembly Center. Unlike other games, student tickets went on sale a couple of days before the game. Unfortunately,I had one of those pesky little things called "test" that afternoon and they issued them all before I could get down there. Tulane popped us pretty good, 83-72.
Hard luck team that year. 14-13 overall, but almost won the SEC. Finished at 11-7,but we were 10-4 at one time and then lost a close one at home to Georgia and then there was the clock fiasco at the end of the Tennessee game. Thank goodness for Tennessee and the refs that was over Mardi Gras break weekend.

The only teams that have ever turned down the NIT were: NC STATE, which had been the previous year's NCAA champion. Oklahoma State, Louisville, Georgia Tech, and Georgetown
Maryland initially declined once but decided to play and lost in the first round.

Been a lot more than that over time.

Alabama turned down the NIT under Daviv Hobbs so he could focus on recruiting. He was fired the following season.

I remember that. 1997. Alabama's press releases made a big deal about the "focus on recruiting part". That paid off for them.
