It's football, men's basketball, and then everything else. Not to belittle other sports, but the numbers don't lie. Baseball has a strong following at a few schools where it really isn't niche, but nationally? It's a distant third (or fourth in many parts of the country) to football and men's hoops. This is no different than fans of northern schools who argue that hockey is not a niche college sport, or east coasters that make the same argument for lacrosse.
Many of these sports would be better classified as regional sports, rather than niche.

I don't think that's true. When teams in the top 25 for attendance are averaging 3k or less per game, I doubt most schools are making money.

An interesting topic. I just read the results of a large national poll regarding fandom in various sports. Some results:
Wrestling was the favorite of those under 5 feet 4 inches.
Cross Country was the dream activity of anorexics.
Dentists love hockey.
arse men like to watch female sprinters.
Baseball is the choice of group home residents.
Nearly all Homosexuals root for soccer, but 100% of heterosexual men want to ban the "sport" and even outlaw the very word "soccer."
ETA: quotes around "sport."

Most recent numbers I could find quickly. It's quite possible these have changed especially considering how fast TV contracts have grown. Not sure if "The Daily Progress" is a reliable source either.
I know LSU generates over 2 million in profit on baseball which is incredible.

I didn't really run the numbers but 3K per game @ 35 home games has to still be more profitable than women's basketball, tennis, softball, track, etc.
In 2015, LSU averaged 10,276. Ole Miss 8066. Arkansas 7928. Miss State 7448. S.Carolina 7314. A&M 4742. Florida (and I'm sure it's much higher this season) 3502. Vandy 3038. Auburn 2800, Alabama 2761, Georgia 2180, Kentucky 2080, Tennessee 1889. Mizzou must just really suck balls because this was just the top 53.

Sill results in a loss for all but a few schools.

They are all niche sports.
50%+ of US residents could care less about sports.
Most of the 50% of sports fans in this country could care less about college sports.
The NFL has triple the following as college football.
College basketball has ridiculously low ratings until March.
If you have kids, whatever sport and team they are playing on will become your most passionate sport to follow.
So..................... they are all niche. But........ to the people that love and follow them, they are vitally important and religious for a lot of them.
Therefore, just enjoy the sport you love and it doesn't really matter how many else follow it or not.

I don't know how much baseball tickets are, but I'll assume $10/game. $10/seat, 35 home games, 2800 fans per game (assuming that # includes students even though they don't pay $10 for tickets). That's $980,000 for the season. Alabama's new coach will make a base salary of $265k. Add in the rest of the coaches, utilities for the stadium, support staff, people to work game days, travel, players, etc. All but maybe 5 schools are losing money on baseball.

Baseball > Basketball IMO. Especially how competitive the SEC is in the sport.

I grew up playing and watching football, basketball, and baseball. Those will forever be the top 3 sports for me.
I don't really care if other SEC fanbases shite on baseball on account that they don't have competitive programs, because LSU baseball has been a great joy for me for my entire life. It's truly a fun game to get into when your team is competitive. Sucks for the fans who don't get to experience that.

My thing is people know who guys like Aaron Judge and Andrew Benintendi are, they are both popular young players who played in college and MLB is more popular than NHL and whatever professional lacrosse's league is. I couldn't tell you more than 3-4 NHL players and zero lacrosse players.
No one is saying watching DII college baseball is fun, but no one watches that in football either. College basketball was still pretty popular when players could go straight to the NBA and skip college so I don't get why people say they don't watch it because of the minor leagues either. Maybe if you just don't like baseball then that's fine.

Let's be honest. College baseball gets the hate it does on this board because it's an easy troll. Plain and simple.

Well if you don't know who the MLB leader in home runs is then you aren't a baseball fan at any level, not just college
