apparently there is so much to do that the locals have no time to attend the SEC tourney.

It's Hoover. Kill yourself. It's really your only option since you're not in the entertainment Mecca of Biloxi, Memphis, Atlanta, New zorleans, etc, etc, etc.

Maybe so...but, according to posters on this board, the only reason they keep the tourney in Hoover is for RV parking.

RV parking is the main reason it stays in Hoover. I don't think anyone will really argue that because anyone that is actually objective knows that Hoover itself doesn't bring that much to the table in terms of amenities.

I live in the area and like it but I'm not going to sugar coat the fact that, outside of the downtown area and the Homewood/Mountain Brook area, most of the area is the typical suburban wasteland of strip malls and chain restaurants.

I agree with all of this. You'd think by reading this board that there was literally nothing to do in Bham. Hoover does suck. However, you can stay downtown if you want and drive back and forth. It's not that hard.

or they could move the tournament downtown and tell the RV people to deal with it

it stays in Hoovah cuz they outbid the other locations.

If the SEC HQ wasn't located in Alabama, do you honestly believe Hoover would win the bid?

It's similar to the Birmingham Bowl. The only reason the SEC has a tie-in is because it's in the HQ's backyard. No other reason to be affiliated with them.

They're just feathering their own nest.

Golf, shop, hike, there's probably something at the comedy club.

Or you could drive 10 minutes into Birmingham and do something fun.

Wish the Barons were in town - you could go to a real stadium.

If you can shake it there is great Mexican hipster food at a restaurant called El Barrio but while you're waiting 40 minutes for a table give them your cell number and get a fancy cocktail down the street at Collins bar

No. If you have 70 dollars to spend on 2 dinners and 2 drinks there are so many better places you can go and things you can do than Collins Bar and El Barrio..

Saws is a much better suggestion. The breweries are cool too. Not sure if the new tap room is open at Good People but it is supposed to be very nice when finished.

Hoover sucks.

ETA: The J Clyde in 5 Points (Downtown Birmingham near UAB) does half off a few select beers on Thursday nights. They are bolded on the menu and typically include a few different local beers.

If you're into the bar scene, Innisfree, Sidebar, Moes or Tin Roof to start the night then Nana Funks after to party until the sun comes up.

In that part of the world they eat Barbecue and go to Barbecue Restaurants. I spent time in North Carolina which is like watching Flies have Sex!
