I'm actually discussing sports which is rare. It seems I piss off more people when I discuss sports than when I drop a cartoon troll thread.

Weird.

1981 and forward. If you haven't won a title by then it's just a shame and you should accept being average.

There are only a few elite programs imo. Only one in the SEC.

Yeah, I don't consider UGA elite on a national scale. I'm not even sure I'd consider them elite on an SEC scale.

Personally i wouldnt consider LSU in elite status anymore. They're still good and if they ever found a capable qb they could go on a 3-4 run of at least playing for conference championships or even NC's.

But right now i'd have them outside of elite status.

Alabama is elite. Florida used to be. Auburn is too up and down. So one elite team in the SEC.

In my opinion Alabama is the only elite program in the SEC.

There is no specific limitation, but if a couple of generations pass and you are not winning anything, then you become the next Minnesota.

When my grandparents passed away recently, they viewed Minnesota as a contender since they were winning national championships when they were growing up. The next generation didn't see Minnesota winning at that same level. Then the next generation came and Minnesota wasn't anything people cared much about.

So it takes a long time to get dropped from the elite status.

Using a dumb cutoff time like 1980 is just dumb. It has more to do with who is relevant in the lifetime of your parents and your own and then into your child's generation.

You have to combine historical power with some likelihood of that power continuing unchanged in the future.

Only Alabama qualifies under that criteria in the SEC. Nationally I'd look at Ohio State, USCw, etc. but no more than 5-6 programs. People throw around the word elite too much.

The thing about Bama is that even when they suxed you knew they would be back.
Same with Mi ND USC. Even when they are down you know they will be back.

Whatever they are, Tennessee is currently exploring the boundaries.

I think you can say there are 10 or so elite programs, meaning less than 10% are elite

Someone like Nebraska is an interesting case to me. Miami as well. Their best was some of the best ever, but now they are 8-9 win teams annually

Ug, I want to downvote you but you are so right.

College Football is such tribal caste system bullshite. Luckily the coaches and recruits don't have the same priorities the fans do or only like ten teams could even have a chance every year.

lol only an idiot would list Nebraska. We played for a national title in the 2000's and remained consistent in winning games.

It was only 19 years ago that the best college football team ever was played. Since that time more conference titles were won, more games played for national titles, and more rankings as the #1 team.

Michigan has far fewer national titles over the last 50 years than Nebraska.

Michigan is still an elite program even with their lack of national titles over the last 50 years.

You don't drop off the elite status by using a mythical time frame that random yahoos like to use.

ND, MI, Nebraska and TN are still elite programs.

Like Minnesota? Nebraska? Miami?

Fact is that the game is changing all the time and it's harder than ever to compete. A program like Oregon has more prestige with today's 18 year olds than a Miami that has won three national titles in my lifetime.

The fans haven't caught up, you still hear fans say shite like "college football is better when Bama/Ohio St./Michigan/USC/Texas/etc. is good." Recruits seem to care less about history than the fans, which gives me hope for the future of the game.
