Marty is earnest and genuine. Clint Stoerner is the same way. Both have their jobs "in spite of" their genuine rural accents and mannerisms.
Thompson carefully cultivates a persona in a neurotic, eye-roll-inducing way.

He makes an appearance in Bourdains Parts Unknown Mississippi delta episode where they eat at City Grocery.
I bet he jerks off to that episode daily

"The seats are filled with southern belles and rebel yells. The flasks, bourbon. The electric buzz of Vaught-Hemingway is audible even on the sweltering banks of Sardis Lake. The fans savor every minute in this cathedral's lower bowl, because they know their team won't be going to one after November."

Yeah he looks like he only writes on his antique typewriter in his office with his dog that wears a red bandana around its neck laying next to him and deer antlers that are mounted on the wall, not because he's a hunter but mounted ironically to show the bisecting nature of a genteel southerner who honors the southern tradition of hunting but a progressive thinker who doesn't condone such barbaric behavior.
And oak...everything's oak
...because Southern.
Hipster southern is a thing.
douche

Plastic imitation bought at target, like this
"As I sit in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium listening to country music, sipping sweet tea, smelling Spanish moss, looking at antebellum architecture, thinking about the Civil War, watching football, eating friend chicken, hunting, fishing, dressing up, and attending church, I'm reminded of the troubled history of my region. A history of hatred that made the blood boil hotter than a July day amongst the magnolia blossoms of the Delta. Bigotry that can't be forgiven, no matter how much you leave in the church collection plate. Yet I still weep like a child when I hear the Ole Miss band play Dixie, even though they don't play it anymore and it makes no sense to be moved to tears by such an upbeat song. And though I know that I'm as southern as you can possibly be, I am glad I've made myself wealthy by exploiting and playing up the region's faults. I'm glad that ESPN is so culturally illiterate that they can't see that my adopted persona is based entirely on heavily exaggerated stereotypes believed to be the gospel truth by people who have never visited the south."

Smith is an awesome, obnoxious SEC fan who is somehow allowed to show it on national television. I love it.

Wright Thompson
Ole Miss agrees to self-impose a permanent ban on Wright Thompson using Ole Miss, and the entire state of Mississippi, as a prop in his shitty 8th grade level writing project. Also, no more television appearances as some sort of Ole Miss or Mississippi rep.
Maybe there is a silver lining here.
You're welcome.
