I know a lot of us enjoy teasing them and might say last year was a Haley's Comet type of occurrence, but what do you really think? Will either or both Mississippi teams still contend for the West next year?

I don't see a clear answer to this. Frankly, it was an unusual convergence for Alabama, LSU, and auburn to slip a notch while Ole Miss and MSU took two steps forward. And the timing played in as well - Alabama and LSU were much more vulnerable in the early weeks as their talent matured, while the MS schools each had experience in leadership positions.

But I'm not going to just gloss over the closing of the talent gap. There is still a big difference, but not as wide as it was two years ago. Ole Miss brings back some big name players in spots, and State brings back Dak. I think the smart money is hedging and betting that one of the two is in the mix for the West at the end of the season.

Thoughts?

This is why it's so hard to have a serious, respectful discussion with or about Ole Miss.

Shore those insecurities up and let's talk football.

OM will be better on D next year while the offense could be a lot worse depending on the play we get from the QB position.

State get Dak back, but man they're losing a lot in other areas.

Bama still needs some help in key positions.. Hell they lost their bowl game

Lsu still has away to go. The coaching changes won't help and les already had 1 foot out the door

Auburn proved the past 2 years their just lucky.. It will catch up with them though

State and Ole Miss are gonna get some players on the field and keep these games interesting.. No more will there be the big blowouts of the past

State could be a contender again, but I want to see how the O line works out. Defense will be an issue with so many leaving. I also worry about the depth the D will have this year. But not switching out as many players will players more experience. WR core should be fine, RB should be good. We won't have the power back, Robinson, but should have more speed. Special teams have GOT to get better. We had too many muffed punts and the kicking game needs to improve.

Not sure I agree with everything here, but you do have a point. There is not a team coming back next year in the SEC with the type of proven experience AND talent to think they are clear favorites, like the seasons a few years back with some of those Florida, LSU, and Alabama teams. I could see the West going a lot of different directions, especially with some potential improvements on defense at auburn and A&M

I don't know if State will be in that position again, and the convergence did help. However, State wasn't entirely lucky as we had to travel to Bama and Ole Miss.

Switch the schedules where State plays Bama and OM at home and plays at Auburn and at A&M, and State still beats Auburn and A&M and then beats OM. Then State has a better chance to beat Bama or at least makes the playoff if Bama still beats State.

In 2015 State does get those teams at home, as well as LSU, but now Auburn and Arkansas will be better and State loses some starters, so I'd say we missed out on our chance. We can still be in the top half of the West, but I don't think we can win it.

forgive me for the deep seated resentments and ill will towards a team and fan base that has beat our brains in for 30 years and has never took us seriously until now, and has never missed an opportunity to rub it in our faces...Im of a mind that the Rebels will be a factor in the west race again this year, due mainly to a defense that will be more stout than last season. Getting over the hump will depend upon above average QB play.

I wouldn't call the sequence of events "lucky" at all. When your team has experience, you want to play the talented teams early in the year and preferably at home. When you have talent but little experience, early road games against quality opponents are tough. That's why I would argue with anyone saying Ole Miss was "lucky" to beat Alabama - they were the better team at that point in the year and in that situation.

And when you throw in a clearly improved Arkansas squad, it's going to be VERY interesting next year.

We return 18/22 starters in Oxford.

During the season, everyone was like "LOL BO WALLACE SUCKS DICK LOLOLOLOL." Now that he is graduating, everyone is like "LOLOLOL YOUR NEW STARTER WON'T BE AS GOOD AS BO LOLOLOLOL."

It's been interesting to watch the narrative change.

Won't be in 2015 for either team. OM has a lot of questions on offense. State has a lot of questions on defense. OM has to find some Rb ' s and a quality qb. State has to find a d-line and some safties.

Bama being a 1-loss SEC champion and the #1 seed in the playoff is slipping a notch?

Everybody is still a notch below Alabama. Ole miss, state, auburn, LSU, and atm will beat each other up. Alabama goes back to Atlanta at 7-1.
