What is Mississippi State's Problem?

Let's fix it.

The first problem I see is that the population of the state is relatively low. Splitting recruits with OM and getting poached by the other schools means that you have to go outside your state to field a 2-deep on both sides of the ball that has the talent to compete for the West every year, or at least be in the conversation and make the season more interesting.

So, how do you do that?

I've only followed recruiting for 2 years, so I'm not an expert.

Secondly, you should build an identity, one that people recognize outside of your state. Big Boy Defense or Wide Receiver U, sort of like how Stanford is Big Boy U of the Pac, big defense of their conference. Sort of the way Georgia Tech is the gimmick offense of the ACC, the Harvard of the South as they like to think of themselves. As ridiculous as it sounds, it can help you recruit.

Thirdly, start poaching second string talent from other schools. A 4 star linebacker sitting on the bench at Alabama is wasting his talent, whisper in his ear, get him to transfer where he can be a game changer. Go whisper in the ear of backup qb's at schools like Georgia, that are usually stacked 4 deep with elite QB talent, most of whom will never see the field.

That's what I would do.

What would you do, Bulldogs of the West?

Would give you 6/10 but since you're a UGA fan you get 3/10.

1.) Schedule Southern Miss to home and home games and try to beat the golden eagles on a regular basis.

2.) Start playing a neutral site game in Texas every year and recruit Texas better.

3.) have to get a more dynamic offense in place - going up against Auburn, LSU, Bama every year is tough - have to get creative to get points.

4.) go hire a good special teams coach. There are plenty out there - become the best at special teams

5.) I was joking about #1 but seriously, the OOC schedule had not been great - Alcorn, MTSU, JSU, Troy, etc do not get you ready for your conference schedule . Play some MWC and CUSA teams and do it as a 1 and done.

You should never travel to a SBC team's stadium.

Play a Texas team in the superdome once in a while.

Mississippi sucks in general - you have to branch out better.

Yeah - that explains why Ole Miss is in Atlanta every December.

A next to impossible question to answer. So many variables. In a nutshell, I think it comes down to overall well-being.

They struggle with the same problems that the state of Mississippi struggles with in general: lower standards, poverty and the pressures that go along with it, competing with others who are in better situations for (job/athletic) talent, geographic location, historic reputation of the state, etc.

Apart from those who happened to grow up in the area, it's damn tough to recruit quality athletes, faculty, and/or coaches under those conditions. I'd say they've over-achieved, considering all that they face.

Yeah, I know. By their logic you'd think Olé Mrs. could at least have a legit West title since Oxford is the most awesomeist town EVAR!

Mississippi State's good teams in the 90s and 2000 were loaded with JUCO players that completed one year of JUCO and 3 years left for D1 ball. Their signing classes would be nearly half JUCO. The rules got changed where players had to complete 3 semesters in JUCO to be eligible for SEC ball and that really hurt them.
