What are the hardest high school football positions to scout and why?

I say it would be the QB and kickers.

QBs come from different styles of offensive schemes and systems. Now-a-days there are more spread style offenses than pro style in high school.

Kickers come from where they kick from wider harsh marks and the uprights on the goal post are wider.

I would say non-QBs from the QB position, because so many teams make the best athlete on the team the QB. It is hard to know how a kid will adjust to a new position.

Easiest is DT. Are they huge? Are they fast? Are they nasty? Give them an offer. You know who will be an elite DT by 9th grade a lot of times.

Your view of this probably depends on the school you're at.

Lineman seems to produce the most 2-3* studs so I'd go with that

We definitely see this at Auburn. We've had a string of QB-> WRs that have been more miss than hit

Oline. The body changes for offensive linemen from their junior year in HS to when they are sophs in college can be very distinct. In addition, unless you play high level competition on a weekly basis, a lineman can just be physically stronger and bigger against inferior players giving you little to go on how they would handle themselves against the big boys.

Think about how many busts you see with Olinemen who were highly rated coming out of HS.

Scouts will admit that OL are hardest to project in HS.

You do not scout QB's during games. You get them in camps and you see if they can throw the 15 to 13 yd comeback on a line first thing.

If you are an option team then you scout during games.

And it makes sense, since it's one position where if you're not playing in a highly competitive district/region then there's a good chance you can be a successful HS OLineman by having size but not necessarily good feet or good upper body control. It becomes a different story when 99% of the DLine you face in college are more athletic and stronger.

Interior Offensive Linemen. Especially considering the enormous size difference.

Coverage DBs, as most HS QBs will lead a CB *OR* they're so much faster than the average WR that they never have to turn their head and they don't always learn proper techniques. Hard to tell how quickly they'll adjust to them.

I think, for the longest time, FG kickers got to use tees in HS. Not sure if that's still the case or not.

Is now and always has been OL. Mostly have to judge based on a kids frame (if he already ways as much a college lineman in high school, chances are he'll get bigger in college and lose speed in his feet) and that is a hard thing to expect to translate in college along with the same quickness and tenacity.

This is because your coach is still too soon removed from being a high school head coach.
The Gus Malzahn thing was always a ticking time bomb. He was a somewhat innovative coach in the high school ranks who won a lot of games, and because of this he catapulted to the ranks of D1 head coach in just a few years. He is now out of his league. He isn't called High School for nothing, and he is gonna show his arse again this year.

I doubt that dude has ever even boned his own wife.
He is like an automaton. Football, football, football. It would be admirable if he were a little better at it.

Maybe he can work on that for you. You should write him a letter so that he can know about your feelings

That's alright. I'm fine with him just the way he is, and where he is.
Good luck with Clemson, btw.

Left tackle.

They seem to love marijuana and illegal firearms.

DTs are Harder than you think

Sometimes big huge guys have just been pushing around high school linemen for four years.
